The Best of Everything

Monday-Saturday, 11
a.m.-9 p.m. Sundays.
HY LEWIS WRITES .. .
"A Detroit musical legend of
the Big Band era passed
away on Friday, Dec. 9,
after a long illness. Let me
take you back in time to the
late '20s on Twelfth Street
where he was concertmas-
ter of Lerman's Juvenile
Concert Band, a most popu-
lar aggregation of talented
youngsters that enjoyed
wide popularity playing
benefit concerts . . theater
houses such as the Grand
Riviera, Ramona, etc.
"Numerous outside
summer concerts in and
around Detroit and also
entertaining at many public
schools that inspired so
many young musicians ..
His remarkable talent with .
the trumpet ultimately took
him to California where he
became lead trumpet with
the Tommy Dorsey or-
, chestra after Ziggy Elman
left for the service.
"He can still be seen as
part of the band in two mo-
tion pictures, one that plays
the late late TV shows ti-
tled, 'Thrill of a Romance'
with Lauritz Melchior,
Esther Williams and Van
Johnson. Taking residence
in the Van Nuys Valley he
subsequently joined such
big band giants as Henri
Busse, Charlie Barnett,
Artie Shaw and then joining
Woody Herman's Herd
playing concerts and giving
USO performances vitually
all over the world.
"Many of you old-
timers may have heard
his music at the
Graystone Ballroom,
Oriole Terrace, The Bow-
ery, etc. He played the
Fort Wayne- Hotel with
his combo for a few years
and we remember him
jamming' one night with
none other than
`Satchmo' Armstrong at
the Bowl-o-Drome Bar on
Dexter Blvd. He was a
long=time member of the
Detroit Musicians Union
where his colleagues
proclaimed him an out:
standing musician with
few peers.
"His name was Irving
Lewis . . . who is now blow-
ing his golden horn in a far
better place."
CHANGE IN SIGN from

... at Greenfield and Lin-
coln 38-seater ... . Chef
Hasan Altaie, with former
owner George Golematis
since he opened in March
1981, has remained . . .
making those delicious
sauces and gourmet dishes
as before .. . Also very
pleasant, personable, wait-
ress Ginnie Broaddus, six
years at the locale.
. Hasan's father-in-law
was the late Rabbi Henry
Goldwater of Cong. Ha-Ner
Tamid in Mt. Clemens.
Mother-in-law Ruth Gold-
water lives in Southfield.

cuisine much like the
gourmet foods still being
enjoyed at Peter's K . . . and
with the same reasonable
prices.
WON'T FIND much
more experience in good
service than from Ann
Marsh at Sero's on North-
western . . . Her back-
ground takes in the former
Sacca's on W. McNichols
(before it became Angel's
Hourglass) and Mocombo's
