Witness Links Klaus Barbie
to Gestapo Raid in France

PARIS (JTA) — A former
U.S. counterintelligence
officer on Tuesday formally
identified Klaus Barbie as
the man who led the gestapo
raid on the Jewish Commu-
nity Center in Lyons during
World War II. Court offi-
cials in Lyons, where Barbie
is being held while awaiting
trial on charges of crimes
against humanity, said that
Michael Thomas recognized
Barbie as the German civi-
lian who led the raid.
Thomas told Investigat-
ing Magistrate Christian
Riss that he was in. Lyons on

Feb. 9, 1943 and was actu-
ally inside the French
Jewish community offices
at the time of the raid. He
said he was arrested with
all the other people in the
building who included the
father of the current French
Justice Minister, Robert
Badinter. He said he was re-
leased by the Germans
thanks to his false identity
papers.
Judge Riss announced
later that Barbie will face
another potential prosecu-
tion witness this week. He
refused to identify the man
but said that he is presumed
to have been present during
the Gestapo raid on a
Jewish children's home in
June 1944 when 41 children
were arrested and deported
to the death camps.
Barbie's defense coun-
sel, Jacques Verges, also
scored a legal victory
when an appelate judge
ruled that a legal docu-
ment presented by the
prosecution was a
forgery. The judge of ap-
peals, sitting alone in
chambers, said that the
me`ssage signed "Bar-
bie," in which he is al-
leged to have informed
Gestapo headquarters of
the arrest of the 41 chil-
dren, was a forgery. The
prosecution had relied on
the document to stress
Barbie's responsibility in
the arrest and deporta-
tion.
The Defense asked Judge
Riss to call on Allan Ryan, a
former aide to U.S. Attor-
ney General William
French Smith and the
author of a report on the
Barbie case, to testify in
Lyons. Verges asked for
Ryan's testimony on
grounds that his report is a
complete contradiction of
Thomas' testimony.

chased.
The newspaper Maariv
reported that a penthouse
apartment atop the Tel
Aviv Hilton was quickly
sold in recent -months de-
spite its advertised price of
$3.5 million.
