WASHINGTON —
Heaven forbid, that it
should be suggested that
President Reagan's Hanuka
visit to the Jewish Commu-
nity Center of Greater
Washington in Rockville,
Md., has anything to do
with next year's election.
But it certainly did him no
harm in the Washington
suburb, which is considered
one of the most liberal in the
nation. •
The President lit a
Hanuka candle and pledged
that the United States will
always support Israel. "The
bonds between our two

people are growing stronger
and they must not and will
never be broken," he said..
But Reagan's most politi-
cally effective act came
after the ceremony was over
and after he had left the
center's auditorium stage as
many in the audience had
started to leave. He sud-
denly returned and said he
could not depart without
thanking the members of
the sixth grade chorus of the
Charles E. Smith Jewish
Day School who sang He-
brew and Yiddish songs
during the program. He
shook hands with each of
the 20 youngsters.

Reagan did not stay
around to sample any of the
Hanuka delicacies such as
sufganiot (donuts) and
latkes which were available
at the center. In the interest
of comprehensive news
coverage I did and can attest
that .it was the President's
loss.
However, Reagan's visit
to the center has upped the
ante for the political cam-
paign where a sampling of
ethnic foods was once con-
sidered enough to show af-
finity with a particular
ethnic group. The Jewish
calendar offers many oppor-
tunities.
Will such environmental-
ists and Democratic
Presidential hopefuls as
Alan Cranston and Gary
Hart appear at Jewish day
schools Jan. 19, which is Tu
b'Shevat, the "Jewish Arbor
Day," and help plant trees?
Walter Mondale can
demonstrate his firmness
by swinging a noisemaker
on Purim while John Glenn
eats a hamantashaen and
pronounces it the "right
stuff."

The Passover Seder is
of course perfect for the
Rev. Jesse Jackson. Er-
nest Hollings, Reuben
Askew and • George
McGovern can all find
appropriate major or
minor holidays to make
their appeal. May 30,
Jerusalem Day, will be a
good opportunity for a
candidate to promise to
move the U.S. Embassy
from Tel Aviv to Israel's
capital.

Rosh Hashana and Yom
Kippur, which fall during
the final weeks of the cam-
paign offer the candidates
an opportunity for soul
searching. Perhaps they can
participate in the tashlikh
ceremony in which Jews
symbolically cast their sins

"So that's how he does
it," said one of the cen-
ter's members, admiring
Reagan's political skills.
Of course, it was not. all -
successful. One of the
young singers was seen
on the local television
news later that night
complaining that she had
sent the President a letter
about nuclear war and he
had never answered.
