FROM THE OUTSIDE
it looks like a little pizza op-
eration . . . that's what an
awning says . . . "Maria's for
Pizza" . . . but at the ex-
pense of making some
enemies in telling about
this place . . . and being
called a blabbermouth . . . I
must inform you of a sleeper
among sleepers.
Maria's is the name . . . on
Walnut and Inkster . . . that
Al Valente and Artie
Oliverio have turned into
one of the most popular lit-
tle- Northern Italian restau-
rants around . . . Seating is
for just about 50 in two
rooms . . . but oh, what food
. . . In fact, if people don't
have reservations, chances
are about 80 percent they'll
have to wait . . . and this-
anytime of the week after 7
p.m.
It is so homey and inti-

mate too . . . with checkered
tablecloths, Hollywood pic-
tures, two little rooms ..
one with five tables and an-
other seven tables . . . Ev-
erything at Maria's is fresh
. . . The sauces, except those
made with meat, are pre-
pared to order • by Artie in
the place out-of-towners
have been taken and
exclaimed, "This is the kind
of spot we've been looking
for all over!"
Maria's is open for
carry-out from 4 p.m....
and dining Tuesday-
Friday 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.,
Saturday and Sunday til
11 ... Don't drive too fast
on Walnut near Inkster
or you'll pass the quaint
little house ... and miss
out on a wonderful culi-
nary experience ... But
remember ... phone first
to assure your getting in.

No lard whatsoever is
used, only vegetable oil,
plus very little MSG
(monosodium glutamate)
... The place is taking on
look now of an Oriental
restaurant ... and more
decorations are coming
from Hong Kong.
I had lunch there recently
. . . and it was quite differ-
ently good . . . Combination
(shrimp, beef and chicken),
vegetable Triple Delight
(mushrooms; pea pods and
bamboo shoots stir-fried)
and Peking Shrimp with
broccoli, baby corn, Napa
(Chinese cabbage) and
straw mushrooms . . . The
difference is readily visible
. . . Welcome to Oriental
Palace.
RON CODEN SHOW is
at Mountain Jack's, Roches-
ter Rd. in Troy, through
Jan. 28.
"AGNES OF GOD"
opens Dec. 27 at Birming-
ham Theater, starring
Peggy Cass and Susan
Strasberg . . . same show
that sold out two years on
Broadway.
LORI JACOBS, local
singer and songwriter, is at
The Mayflower Hotel on W.
Ann Arbor Trail in
Plymouth, Fridays and
Saturdays through Jan. 28.
"NEVER MORE
QUOTH The Raven" wrote
Edgar Allan Poe . . . but not
that the Raven wouldn't re-
turn . . . The name has come
back to its original location
. . . on Greenfield and 12
Mile . . . where Kit and
Herb Cohen had original
spot . . . Followed- by
Bar-B-Q House of South-
field and Minnie's Seafood
of Southfield.
Opened Dec. 14 was The
Raven Family Restaurant
. . . seating 90 downstairs,
booths and tables, and 60 .
upstairs to be used only
when needed except for
banquets . . . It is now
owned by Harry Sulloli,
15-year restaurateur of
former family-style places
in St. Clair Shores and Mt.
Clemens . . . also assisting
in preparing food . . . To
make it a restaurant people
operation, Julie Quinn,
former waitress and hostess
at many spots, is Harry's
manager.
Soups are homemade .. .
fresh fish among a nine-
seafood selection . . . five
burgers, five steaks and
chops, 14 cold sandwiches,
not including three very
interesting-sounding pita
bread sandwiches, three hot
sandwiches, salads, Italian
and Greek dishes . . . daily
lunch and dinner specials
. . . various omelettes, low
calorie menu section, four
kinds of chicken, veal cut-
lets, baby beef liver, shish
kabob, roast sirloin of beef,
desserts aplenty, children's
menu and more.
Prices are moderate .. .
and The Raven Family Res-
taurant is open seven days a
week . . . 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

ROSE GUTTMAN at
Irving's Deli, Greenfield
north of 11 Mile, is so thank-
ful and appreciative to
many people . . . including
strangers . . . at the over-
whelming well wishes for
husband Irving Guttman
. . . that she can't begin to
thank them all . . . Untold
amount of donations to
causes in Irving's name .. .
even from synagogues .. .
and touchingly, people she
has never met . . . Receiving
Hospital in Detroit sent her
a letter that it had received
a donation . . . Also set up in
his name is a scholarship by
the 25 employees of Irving's
Deli . . . at Pioneer
Women/Na'amat Voca-
tional Training in Israel.
Irving's leg was ampu-
tated just below the knee at
Henry Ford Hospital . . . It
was his second amputation
. . . first time, other leg had
been severed above the
knee.
Irving's great spirits are a
boon to all people . . . and
certainly something to
make others not feel sorry
for themselves . . . Whether
in a wheelchair or walking
with canes on artificial
legs, Irving Guttman will
always be a symbol of hope
. . . that life truly does go on.
FOOD DISTRIBUTOR
Allan Ross does a complete
about face . . . with his
watercolors and oil painting
shows Mondays to Fridays,
9 a.m.-9 p.m. and Saturdays
9 a.m.-5 p,m. .. . through
Dec. 28 . . . sponsored by
Cultural Arts Division of
Southfield Parks and Rec-
reation Dept. . . . in Civic
Center Gallery on Ever-
green . . . He works with
handmade paper on a series
of mixed media and collage
. . . ranging from reprsenta-
tional to purely imagined
objects, including abstrac-
tional forms' and ex-
pressionism.

IT'S NOW CALLED
Oriental Palace . . . no more
North China on Northwest-
ern and 12 Mile in Franklin
Plaza . . . with new chef,
new menu and addition of
full Cantonese meals in-
cluding homemade egg
rolls, soup, tea, etc. . . . Also
Mandarin and Szechuan
dishes . . . No more center
booths, and cashier sector is
now away where it should
have been in the first place.
Oriental Palace is an in-
timate wide-open area . . .
with red tablecloths at
dinner, carpeting scarlet
red, very thick plastic dis-
hes and tea cups at lunch,
both of which cost more
than regular dishware, plus
gleaming silverware . . . At
dinner, real china dishes
are used.
Other than big difference
in food, service is now also
the thing at Oriental Palace
(not to be confused with any
other restaurant using this
first name title) . . . Nelson
Chen, PhD in nutrition, re-
mains . . . with new
partners Margaret and Paul
