Scholar Seeks Re-Assessment of Jesus

NEW YORK — A leading
Jewish historian of religion
believes that unity between
Jews and Christians can
develop through Jesus, the'
"cause of separation" be-
tween them.

Writing in the current
issue of "Face to Face," the
interreligious journal of the
Anti--Defamation League of
Bnai Brith, Dr. David Flus-
ser, professor of Judaism of
the Second Temple period

and of early Christianity at
Hebrew University,
Jerusalem, declares that
though "tension with
Judaism" was once an his-
torical necessity if Chris-
tianity was to become a

world religion for former
pagans, "such a necessity no
longer exists."
Using the symbolism ' of
Martin Luther, he
enumerates 57 theses on the
emergence of Christianity
from Judaism, beginning
with the fact that Jesus was
a Jew who lived and died for
the Jewish faith and ending
with the notion that separa-
tion was not Jesus' intent.
According to Dr. Flusser,
unity is possible if Chris-
tianity follows the real mes-
sage of Jesus, and purges it-
self of anti-Jewish tenden-
cies.
He goes on to state that
"Christianity can renew
itself out of Judaism and
with the help of Judaism"
become "a humane reli-
gion."
Dr. Flusser's paper is one
of seven in the "Face to
Face" issue which is devoted
to "Examining the Sources:
Studies in the Jewish and
Christian Tradition." The
papers were reprinted with
the permission of the Rain-
bow Group, an association
of Christian and Jewish
scholars engaged in inter-
faith dialogue in Jerusalem.

War Comparison

TEL AVIV (ZINS) -- The
newspaper Maariv com-
plained editorially that the
same reporters who charged
Israel with decimating the
civilian population of Leba-
non during the invasion of
1982 have become very "ob-
jective" and disinterested in
the PLO fighting around
Tripoli.
The newspaper asked,
"Has anyone heard about a
photo of a wounded Tripoli
child standing at President
Reagan's desk to remind
him of the tragedy?"
