Editor, The Jewish News:
1983 was a year of looking
back. Fifty years ago Adolf
Hitler was named chancel-
lor of Germany. This was
the beginning of the terrible
tragedy which still darkens
our times and will continue
to cloud the lives of coming
generations: the destruc-
tion of German, nay Euro-
pean Jewry; the millions
killed in concentration
camps and on the
battlefields; the dismem-
berment and the division of
Germany; the enslavement
of Eastern Europe.
A few weeks after Hitler
came to power in Germany,
Franklin D. Roosevelt was
sworn in as President of the
United States. He was a
champion of international
liberty and freedom and an
architect of the wartime al-
liance against national-
socialist Germany. But his
boundless, almost naive
trust in men and ideas also
led him to make decisions
with tragic effects for de-
cades to come.
Today both, the results of
the criminal's outrages and
the consequences of the be-
nevolist's (sic) misguided
good intentions are our
legacies. We must live with .
the heritage we find. No-
body can get off the train of
history, though many are
trying. Nobody can start
anew at the imaginary
point zero.
All this adds up to a
challenge for us, the
older generation. We
must not retreat, neither
out of indolence nor in
resignation. We have
gathered experiences.
We have come to ap-
preciate the worth of
democracy, of liberty. We
know how quickly peace
can be threatened if these
values are slighted or
even discarded.
We have gone through
dark days, and many a one
asks himself: "Why was I
spared?" The answer, if
there is one, can only be
given by our actions.
In this sense I wish you
pensive and peaceful holi-
days and a stimulating,
blessed year 1984.

NOTE: If your phone is equipped with Touch Tone'
service, pressing the # button after you've
completed dialing will speed your call along.

r,

Overseas
calling
is getting
better by
the minute.

for example, between 3:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m., the initial minute of a
direct-dialed call to Tel Aviv costs only $2.21*—additional minutes
are 80 cents* each. These same low rates apply to all other Israeli cities.
If your telephone exchange isn't presently equipped for international
dialing, you still get the same low rate on station-to-station calls placed
through an operator. Overseas dialing— it's easy...it's inexpensive...
it's fast! And the sound of your voice is so much more personal than
a letter or telegram.
Want to know more? Then dial our International Information Service
toll free: 1 800 874-4000.
