Schindler Lauds Shultz Stance

Addressing an Allied
Jewish Campaign meeting
Tuesday night at the home
of Mr. and Mrs. Emery
Klein, Rabbi Alexander
Schindler, president of the
Union of American Hebrew
Congregations, hailed Sec-
retary of State George
Shultz "for having the grace
and guts, to face down the

wrath of oil rich Arab sheiks
and so-called. Arab moder-
ates" in defending the new
U.S. relations with Israel.
Rabbi Schindler also
praised the Reagan Ad-
ministration's policy of fir-
ing back at _Syrian-held
positions that have at-
tacked American forces in
Lebanon. "The U.S. policy is

this week to protest what
they termed plans to reduce
their real wages. The em-
ployees reported for work,
but refused to deal directly
with the public.
The strike also affected
the government press office,
which issued official bulle-
tins but did not provide
foreign correspondents with
translations of press arti-
cles and editorials as usual.
The Foreign Ministry's reg-
ular press briefing was also
cancelled.
The week-long strike of
stevedores at the nation's
ports continued, but in re-
duced form. They began
loading fruits and vegeta-
bles for shipment to Euro-
pean markets in time for
Christmas, but at the port of
Ashdod oranges and le-
mons were not loaded be-
cause the citrus marketing
board personnel declared a
strike.
The strike of the steve-
dores resulted in the loss of
millions of dollars to far-
mers. Tons of fruits and
vegetables had to be de-
stroyed after a week's expo-
sure on the docks.

Schindler said, adding:
"The diplomatic approach
was applied to Damascus
and found wanting. Syria's
dictator, Hafez Assad, re-

Schindler stated, "The
