Meyer Cooper has a re-
cord of several decades of
participation in major
Jewish events. On his 90th
birthday, on the last night
of the celebration of
Hanuka, the esteem in
which he is held was put
into action. At the dinner
arranged by his family,
with the participation of
numerous community asso-
ciates, he was awarded
plaques and citations tak-
ing into account his numer-
ous services.
A long-time associate in
many movements, Edward
Miller presented
Nonagenarian Cooper with
plaques from the Jewish
National Fund, Jewish Wel-
fare Federation, City of
Hope and Pioneer
Women/Naamat.

At the same time, the
JNF sent him a certificate
planting 90 trees in Israel in
his honor.
A grandson, Howard
M. Perlman, was master
of ceremonies at the
birthday dinner held at
Cong. Shaarey Zedek on
Dec. 7. Arranged by the
Milgram family, honors
also were extended to
Cooper's wife, Fanny,
with added cheers for
their 46-year marriage.
Louis Milgram led a fam-
ily choir in a musical trib-
ute, "I Am an Ordinary
Man," to the celebrant.
There were songs with
the children and grandchil-
dren participating, and the
acclaim was for the four-
decade title of "Papa" with
which Cooper is greeted by
the family.
The address by Cooper's
brother, Rabbi Samuel
Cooper who recently retired
from his 51-year congrega-
tional post in Charleston,
W. Va., was of special inter-
est. Rabbi Cooper came here
from Miami Beach, Fla., to
participate in the event.
The party attendees in-
cluded a bus-load of rela-
tives from Toronto.
Greeting Cooper in addi-
tion to members of the fam-
ily, with emphasis on the
grandchildren, were Rabbi
Irwin Groner, Cantors
Chaim Najman and Sidney
Rube, David Hermelin and
Leonard Herman. A musi-
cal greeting by Phyllis
Newman was an added pro-
gram feature.
Meyer Cooper was
born in Poland and set-
tled with his family in To-
ronto. He came to the
United States before
World War I. He served in
the Canadian army dur-
ing World War I and was
sent to Siberia with the
Canadian Expeditionary
Force.
In addition to the move-
ments honoring him with
citations at the Hanuka
birthday dinner, Cooper is
an Hadassah Associate, is a
MEYER COOPER

and Bnai Israel-Beth
Yehuda, has been active in
Knights of Pythias, has
roles in Technion Society,
Zionist Organization of
America and is a past life
member of Jericho Lodge
IOOF.. He served as
president of the Hebrew
Memorial Society.
The nonagenarian's re-
sponse was a resume of fam-
ily experiences, devotions
and loyalties, his rededica-
tion to faith, to the syna-
gogue, and to Jewish Zionist
causes.

Goes to Trial
NEW YORK — The $50
million libel suit brought by
Israeli Cabinet Minister
Ariel Sharon against Time
magazine has been ordered
to go to trial. The suit stems
from Time's coverage of the

in Lebanon.
