Hannah Arendt at Center
of Dispute Involving Book

NEW YORK — Hannah
Arendt, the late German
author and Holocaust sur-
vivor who first came into
the public eye after criticiz-
ing American efforts to
thwart the Holocaust, is
again the subject of con-
troversy, the New York
Times reported earlier this
month.
According to the Times, a
number of publishers be-
lieve that a new novel by
Arthur A. Cohen is actually
a thinly-disguised biog-
raphy of the late social

philosopher. Cohen how-
ever, insists that although
"An Admirable Woman"
(David Godine Books) was
inspired by Miss Arendt, it
is in no way biographical.
Cohen was Miss Arendt's
editor at Meridian Books,. a
company he founded in
1953. Meridian published
three of Miss Arendt's books
before the company
changed hands in 1959.
"An Admirable Woman"
was turned down by a
number of publishers before
Godine accepted it.

Violence in Jewish Families Is a Hidden Statistic in U.S.

of nine Orthodox, Con-
servative and Reform
synagogues revealed 22
incidents of battered
wives, four incidents of
sexual abuse, 11 inci-
dents of forced social
isolation and 118 inci-
dents of violent acts
towards children.
"Jews, like non-Jews,
transmit family violence
from one generation to the
next," Miss Goldsmith
writes, noting that previous
studies have shown that
child abusers were often
abused children and that
wife batterers were often
both abused children and
witnesses to the battering of
their mothers by their
fathers. "Our study
validated these findings,"
Miss Goldsmith reports.
Of those who reported vio-
lence in their families, the

NEW YORK — Although
violence is as prevalent in
Jewish families — 10 to 20
percent — as in non-Jewish
households, the reluctance
of those involved to speak of
the problem reinforces the
myth that it does not exist _
in the Jewish community.
These conclusions are,re-
ported in the winter issue of
Reform Judaism, the quar-
terly magazine published
by the Union of American
Hebrew Congregations, in
an article by Ellen
Goldsmith.
Miss Goldsmith, assis-
tant director of the adult
program at Belle Park
Psychiatric Hospital in
Houston, conducted a study
in 1980 of family violence in
the Los Angeles Jewish
community.
