U.S. Official Rejects Criticism
of Navy Air Strike on Syrians

WASHINGTON (J:TA) —
A ranking State Depart-
ment official rejected the
contention by two former Is-
rael Air Force commanders
that the U.S. air strike
against Syrian anti-aircraft
and radar positions in
Lebanon Sunday was an op-
erational failure and
demonstrated lack of ex-
perience by American
pilots.
Two of the 28 carrier-
based .Navy planes were
shot down by the Syrians.
Deputy Secretary of State
Kenneth Dam, appearing
on the PBS-TV MacNeil/
Lehrer News Hour on Mon-
day night, cited the Penta-
gon's announcement that
the mission was "very suc-
cessful and achieved our ob-
jectives." He said the criti-

U.S. Air Strike
Was Put on Hold

WASHINGTON —
Newsweek magazine said in
its issue dated Dec. 12 that
U.S. had planned to attack
the exact floor of a hotel in
Baalbek, Lebanon which
U.S., Israeli and French in-
telligence sources said
housed the Shiite Muslems
who were responsible for
the destruction of U.S. and
French military headquar-
ters in Beirut on Oct. 23.
Newsweek says President
Reagan decided against the
air attack after the French
bombed Baalbek in retalia-
tion.

Shultz Says Shamir, Gemayel Talks Were 'Helpful to us'.

WASHINGTON (JTA) —
Secretary of State George
Shultz said that his talks
last week with Israeli Pre-
mier Yitzhak Shamir and
Lebanese President Amin
Gemayel resulted in an
"improved basis for working
toward the objectives we are
seeking" in Lebanon.
Shultz, responding to re-
porters questions at a news
conference in the State De-
partment, said that the
talks with the Israelis were
"helpful to us" and would
lead to "concrete steps" in
the aim of helping. Lebanon
regain control of its terri-
tory. But he was not specific
on what these steps are.
Shultz stressed that the
security of Israel is an im-
portant element in the sta-
bility of the Jewish state.
He said among the dis-
cussions with the Israelis
was the "very substantial"
Soviet military built-up in
Syria and how this should
be dealt with.

Israel Air Force Gens.
Benny Peled and Mordecai
Hod was not valid unless
the Israelis possess infor-
mation the United States
does not have.

Peled was quoted as
telling reporters in Tel
Aviv that the big problem
was that "the American
Navy has not seen action
for many years and
therefore its pilots lacked
combat experience." Hod
reportedly said the
American raid did not in-
flict extensive damage on
the Syrians.

The Navy aircraft em-
ployed in the strike were
subsonic A7 Corsairs and
A6E Intruders which have
lower speeds than the mis-
siles which struck them.

Russian-Israeli
Relations Studied

TEL AVIV — Relations
between Israel and the
Soviet Union and their
implications for peace in the
Middle East will be the sub-
ject of a new research proj-
ect at Tel Aviv University's
Jaffee Center for Strategic
Studies.
The project has been
made possible by the
recently-inaugurated,
California-based Dr. Irene
Halmos Fund for Research
in Soviet-Israeli Relations
Towards Peace.

air attack took place after
U.S. reconnaissance planes
were fired upon "very heav-
ily" by those who knew the
planes were U.S. reconnais-
sance planes.
"We're there in a
peacekeeping role," Shultz
stressed. He said the U.S.

Shultz stressed that Sun-
day's U.S. air attack on Sy-
rian targets in Lebanon was
not an escalation of force by
the U.S. or a message to the
Syrians aimed at convinc-
ing them to pull their forces
out of Lebanon. He said the

military in Lebanon returns
fire only when fired upon,
and by targeting the source
of the fire not any particular
country or group.
