Friday, December 9, 1983 11 THE DETROIT JEWISH HEWS Sidney Leiwant of ORT Dies NEWARK (JTA) — Sid- ney Leiwant, honorary president and immediate past president of the Ameri- can ORT Federation, died Dec. 5 at age 71. Born in Austria, Mr. Leiwant was brought to.the United States as a child by his parents and spent his formative years in Connec-- ticut. He was graduated from the University of Alabama in 1934. He sub- sequently settled in Verona, N.J. Mr. Leiwant was active in all phases of Jewish com- munal life. He was active in the American ORT Federa- tion for more than a decade, having served as vice president of its central board. He also served on the executive committee of the World ORT Union, to which he was a delegate. In addition, Mr. Leiwant was a president of the Jewish Education Associa- tion of Metropolitan New Jersey; president of the Jewish Community Federa- tion of Metrowest (formerly Metropolitan New Jersey); general chairman of the UJA of Metrowest; board member of The New Jersey Jewish News and the Fed- eration Community Rela- tions Committee. He also was president of Temple Israel of the Oranges and Maplewood; vice president and board member of the United Way of Essex County; and a member of the boards of the Jewish Counseling and Service Agency and the He- brew Youth Academy. Dr. Kagan Dies NEW YORK — Dr. Abram S. Kagan, founder of International Universities Press Inc., died Dec. 5 at age 94. He leaves his wife, Rose--S.; a daughter, Davida M. of San Francisco, Calif.; and two brothers, Meyer and Lawrence A. of Ignatyev Dies, Linked to `Doctors Plot' NEW YORK — Semyon D. Ignatyev, Soviet minis- ter of state security in January 1953 when the Soviet government dis- closed the "doctors plot," in which 15 physicians, many of them Jews, were arrested on charges of having plotted to kill Soviet leaders, is dead at age 79. According to the New York Times, in April of that year, Mr. Ignatyev's suc- cessors repudiated the charges and freed the doc- tors. They said Mr. Ignatyev had shown "political blind- ness and gullibility" in allowing false charges to be brought by a Deputy Minis- ter of State Security named Ryumin. Mr. Ignatyev was dismissed as a national party secretary. Reva Appleton Reva Appleton, active in Jewish organizations in Grand Rapids for more than 40 years, died Dec. 7. Mrs. Appleton was a resi- dent of Royal Oak for the last two years. She had taught Hebrew school for 40 years at Cong. Ahavas Is- rael in Grand Rapids, and was active in its sisterhood, Bnai Brith Women and senior citizen organiza- tions. She is survived by a son, Dr. Abner Ragins of Franklin; a daughter, Mrs. James (Barbara) Hotary of Grand Blanc; and six grandchildren. Interment Grand Rapids St. Ignace, Mich. * * * ARTHUR SNITZ, 71, died Dec. 1. He leaves his wife, Gail; a daughter, Mrs. Emery (Natalie) Weinber- ger; a sister, Mrs. Bessie Suhd; and three grand- children. of Las Vegas, Nev., died Nov. 25.
