THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Vandals Hit Illinois U. Hillel CHICAGO (JTA) — Un- identified vandals smashed all the windows at Hillel House at the University of Illinois in Champaign on Nov. 25. The damage to the windows was estimated at close to $7,000. According to Barry Mehler, a student in the university, the vandals also overturned a dumpster "which weighs more than a car, leading us to suspect that more than one person was involved." He said there was no one in the building at the time. A stu- dent who arrived at the Hillel building Saturday morning for Shabat services discovered the damage and called the police and Hillel Rabbi Steve Sniderman. Mehler said that there have been other, minor incidents in the past di- rected against the Jewish student population on the campus. In addition, Arabs on the campus stage' demonstrations, periodically against Zionism. Mehler said there are an Center Seminar NEW YORK — An insti- tute for full-time Jewish community center profes- sionals with assignments in communications and public relations will be conducted by JWB in Philadelphia Jan. 10-12. estimated 8,000-10,000 Jewish students at the uni- versity, out of a total stu- dent body of 52,000. Settlers Occupy Nablus Site JERUSALEM (JTA) — Militant Jewish settlers are continuing their occupation of Joseph's Tomb in Nablus, a. site they took over last week to protest the axe at- tack on a Jewish settler in the Nablus marketplace last week. The settlers agreed, how- ever, to restrict- their presence to the daylight hours in conformity with army regulations. At night they gather at Bracha, a settlement near Balus which is the home of the at- tack victim, Yosef Stern. The settlers said they were dissatisfied with the response they got from De- fense Minister Moshe Arens at a meeting in Tel Aviv Friday over the deteriorat- ing security situation in the West Bank. Arens, who learned of the situation when he returned from Washington, said the occupation of the tombsite in Nablus was "illegal" but no action was taken to re- move the settlers. The mili- tary government rejected their request for permission to stage a demonstration in Nablus, the largest Arab city in the territory.
