Trudeau Says Israel Should Leave West Bank and Gaza Free Stamps from Israel

MONTREAL (JTA) —
Prime Minister Pierre El-
liott Trudeau said in
-Kuwait, where he is visiting
as part of his worldwide trip
to promote peace, that Is-
rael should leave the terri-
tory it captured during the
Six-Day War and allow the
Palestinians there to elect

their own leaders, even if it
means the election of PLO
chief Yasir Arafat.
"The Palestinian people
should be given their rights
and a homeland in the West
Bank and Gaza Strip,"
Trudeau told reporters in
Kuwait City "Con-
sequently, we ask that Is-

rael withdraw and its set-
tlement policy be stopped
and reversed."
He added that the Pales-
tinian people "should be at
the center of any settlement
to the Israel-Arab wars."

Correspondent Brian
Nelson accepted an invi-
tation to co-anchor a
newscast on Abu Dhabi
television, but was given
little time to go over his
script which contained
references to Israeli
Premier Yitzhak Shamir
as "that terrorist
Shamir" and calling Is-
rael "the Zionist entity."
The characterization of
Shamir was evidently a
reference to his activity as a
member of the pre-state
Stern group.

Civil Rights Post for Abram

WASHINGTON —
Former Brandeis Univer-
sity President Morris
Abram was one of three
people appointed by
President Reagan this week
to the reconstituted United
States Commission on Civil
Rights.
Abram had been nomi-
nated for a post on the corn-
mission last May, however,
the Senate chose not to con-
firm any of the President's
nominees to the body before
adjourning last month.
Under the new guidelines
set forth in a bill signed by
the President on Nov. 30,
the commission has been
made an independent
agency, eliminating the
need for Senate confirma-
tion of appointees.
In addition to Abram,
President Reagan ap-
pointed John H. Bunzel, a
senior research fellow at the
Hoover Institution on War,
Revolution and Peace at
Stanford University and
Esther Gonzalez-Arroyo
Buckley, a Laredo, Tex.
high school science teacher
to posts on the commission.
The President's refusal to
re-appointe Mary Louise
Smith, a former chairman of
the Republican National
Committee who had
criticized the Administra-
tion's civil rights policies,
was criticized by civil rights

Israel, Chile
Agree on Trade

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
The official visit of Chile's
Foreign Minister Miguel
Schweitzer Walters ended
last with agreements to ex-
pand trade and agricultural
cooperation between Israel
and that South American
country.
. While in Israel, Walters
conferred with acting
Foreign Minister Moshe
Nissim and Deputy Foreign
Minister Yehuda Ben-Meir.
Chile, an arid country, is
particularly interested in
Israel's experience and
know-how in the develop-
ment of advanced irrigation
techniques. Israel will send
a team of experts to Chile
shortly to discuss possible
joing projects in that field.
The two countries also
agreed to encourage their
businessmen to exchange
visits and to participate in
each others' trade fairs and
exhibitions.
