Merkava Tank ` Mothers' Troops

JERUSALEM — The
Merkava, Israel's latest
tank, was developed and de-
signed in Israel, and al-
though the engine is of
American manufacture,
most of the parts and sys-
tems are locally designed
and produced.
The Merkava represents
a new concept in tank de-
sign which combines un-
precedented crew protection
with maneuvarability, ver-
satility and advanced
technology. The design was
based on the Israel army's
future battle requirements,
incorporating lessons
gained from recent combat
experience.
In addition, everything
possible has been done to
provide maximum crew pro-
tection — the heavy armor

plating and the revised
interior layout are espe-
cially effective in this re-
spect — so much so, that the
tank is affectionately
known as "the Jewish
Mother."

The tank also incorpo-
rates an original Israeli-
designed system for
transferring commands
from the tank comman-
der to the driver, while
the novel configuration
of the Merkava enhances
its versatility, enabling it
to perform such secon-
dary roles as command
vehicle, troop carrier or
ambulance.
During Operation Peace
for the Galilee, the Merkava
played an important role in
the destruction of Syrian

Danes Honor Danny Kaye
for Film, UNICEF Roles

By HERBERT LUFT

(Copyright 1983, JTA, Inc.)

HOLLYWOOD — Danny
Kaye has been awarded the
Knight's Cross First Class
of the Order of Dannebrog
by Queen Margrethe H of
Denmark. The presentation
was made by Royal Danish
Consul General Henning
Kristiansen at his Los
Angeles home last month.
Kaye portrayed Hans
Christian Andersen in the
memorable Samuel
Goldwyn musical of 30
years ago.
Fully recovered from a re-
cent operation, he flew to
Copenhagen last month to
conduct the Royal Danish
Symphony in a UNICEF
benefit concert.
The queen's citation
noted that "Kaye's warm
and sensitive portrayal of
Denmark's folk hero, Hans
Christian Andersen has
long endeared him to the
people, reflecting those rare
qualities of gentle humor
and inner strength which
have enabled him to be
identifed as a "Pied Piper to
the children of the world."
The award also was sig-
nificant as a double an-
niversary. Kaye was born
70 years ago and has been
devoted to UNICEF for
30 years.

ARTHUR COHN, pro-
ducer of such Academy-
award winning films as the
stirring anti-Nazi picture,
"The Garden f the Finzi-

Continis," the documentary
feature, "The Sky Above —
The Mud Below" (made in
New Guinea); and the more
recent French-language
"Black and White in Color,"
has completed "A Fool's
Gambit." The new picture is
set against the background
of the world championship
chess tournament in Paris
in which a Soviet chessmas-
ter opposes a dissident Rus-
sian whose views are sup-
pressed by the government.
The film stars Liv
Ullmann and Leslie Caron
as well as Michel Piccoli,
with German actor Bernard
Wicky and Russian-born
Alexandre Arbatt. Stage di-
rector Richard Dembo
makes his debut behind the
camera; Raoul Coutard is
the cinematographer.

CANTOR MOSHE
KOUSSEVITZKY is por-
trayed by Toronto-born
Cantor Paul Zim in Moshe
Mizrahi's "The Children's
War," photographed in
Budapest and in Auschwitz.
Zim, 39, the same age as
Koussevitzky was at the be-
ginning of WWII, was flown
specially to Hungary for a
wedding service within the
picture, chanting Jewish
liturgy and appearing as
Koussevitzky who at the
time of the opening chapter
of the story officiated at the
Tlomatska Temple.
