THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS 4idayr , December 2, 1983- - ' Dr. Azriel Weller Dies Dr. Azriel Weller, a medi- cal doctor and dentist, died Nov. 23 at age 91. Born in Austria, Dr. Wel- ler was graduated from the University of Vienna Medi- cal School in 1923 and the University of Michigan Dental School in 1936. He was a lifetime member of the Michigan Dental Association and the Detroit District Dental Society. He also was a member of Alpha Joel N. Zacks Joel N. Zacks, a pharma- cist and owner of Brown Drugs in Novi, died Nov. 25 at age 56. A native Detroiter, Mr. Zacks was a member of Temple Israel, Knollwood Country Club and many pharmacy organizations. He leaves his wife, Ber- nice; a son, David; a daugh- ter, Susan; and his mother, Mrs. Meyer (Hannah) Zacks. The Family of the Late HARRY F. Dr. Weller retired from dentistry one year ago due to ill health, not his age. He was honored in 1982 by Alpha Omega on behalf of State of Israel Bonds with a Maimonides award.' He leaves nephews and nieces, among them Dr. and Mrs. Eric (Doris) Billes and Dr. and Mrs. Bruce (Phyllis) Billes. Samuel Panzer Samuel Panzer, deputy sheriff of Wayne County for 20 years, died Nov. 26 at age 76. Born in Detroit, Mr. Panzer was active in politics and labor in the state, county and city levels for many years. He retired as deputy sheriff in 1972. He was a precinct dele- gate, delegate alternate and delegate to the Democratic National Convention. He was a member of the Demo- cratic State Central Com- mittee, member of the Trade Union Leadership Council for 15 years, served as co-chairman of the TULC Seniors and was chairman of the Sheriffs Local 502 Re- tirees. He was a member of the executive board of the A. Philip Randolph Insti- tute, chairman and com- missioner of the Wayne County Commission- on Aging, a member of the Michigan Committee of Energy and Utilities, a member of the metro De-_ troit AFL-CIO and chairman of the Senior Citizens Service Council. He received numerous awards including the Spirit of Detroit Award of the Detroit City Council. In 1978, he won the Senior Citizen of the Year Award of the AFL-CIO and in 1983 received the Distinguished Senior Citizen Award of AFSCME Council 25. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Jacob (Rose) Jackson of North Miami Beach, Fla.; a sister, Mrs. William (Helen) Vaughn of Detroit; two grandchildren and two great-grandchil- dren.
