JERUSALEM (JTA) —
The first attempt to estab-
lish a chain of regional
newspapers in Israel has
collapsed after seven
months of mounting losses
estimated in the hundreds
of thousands of dollars.
The publishers, Eitan
Communications, an-
nounced last Friday that
the 14 weekly newspapers,
published under the collec-
tive title "Rehov Rashi"
(Main Street), have been
closed and some 150 em-
ployees were dismissed.

The venture, begun last
April, failed for lack of
advertising. David Go-
lan, director general of
the Danot Investment v
Group, one of the backers'
of the enterprise, de- -
dined to give details.
Haaretz reported that the
losses were in six figures.
Other investors were the
Bank Leumi and Delta
Galil.
The chain failed when the
promoters were unable to
raise additional capital or
sell the papers to other par-
ties.

Meanwhile, the Bloom-
field Hills schools have
adopted a policy statement,
"Respect for Religious Pref-
erences," after parents
complained that invocation
prayers at commencement
exercises in June included
the words, "in Christ's
name."
In East Lansing, attorney
Zolton Ferency is leading a
fight against a proposal that
the city's cable commission
use programming from the
Christian Broadcasting
Network. Ferency says the
Christian network takes

The policy will be dis-
cussed after complaints
were aired last month about
Campus Life, a Christian
group, operating at North
Farmington High School
with the approval of the
school's principal.
Some observors believe
that the board may also ad-
dress the issue of holiday
displays and programs in
the schools.
