Mark Cousens, said he re-
quested the delay from next
Monday's scheduled start-
ing date in order to prepare
the case and have the hear-
ing scheduled on consecu-
tive days.
Cousens said that MERC
may not hand down a deci-
sion in the case until next
fall, "although we will ask
for a decision more quickly."
He said the two sides will
have to prepare briefs for
MERC after the hearing.
Cousens re-stated his
contention that Akiva
will lose vast sums if
MERC finds in favor of
the teachers. The school
would be forced to pay
back pay to Nov. 4. He
said any appeals process
following the MERC de-
cision would move
quickly from MERC di-
rectly to the Michigan
Court of Appeals.
On Nov. 4, the teachers
ended their nine-week pic-
ket line but Akiva could not
re-hire them because all but
one part-time position had
been filled by replacement
teachers.
Meanwhile, 10 of the
striking teachers have filed
for unemployment compen-
sation in what is expected to
be a challenge of Akiva's
exemption from paying
such compensation.
Cousens said an 11th strik-
ing teacher is considering
formal resignation from
Akiva.
There were originally 22
teachers who struck the
school The other 11 have
either returned to the school
or resigned.

S. African Blacks 47-u Spruce Up Your
Holiday With A
Training in Israel 4

TEL AVIV (JTA) — Eigh-
teen young blacks from
South Africa are in Israel
for training as pilots.
They are citizens of Cis-
kei, a "homeland" estab-
lished for blacks by the Pre-
toria government but not of-
ficially recognized by Israel.
For that reason, the
trainees carried South Afri-
can passports when they
landed in Israel last week.
The president of Ciskei,
Lennox Sebe, also carried a
South African passport
when he visited Israel ear-
lier this month.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A
local Jewish communal
agency has effectively
adapted a model established
by its national body to in-
volve a cross-section of the
community in efforts to
promote Jewish educational
experiences for all ages and
to help combat asssimila-
tion and alienation.
The Memphis Jewish
Community Center has set
up a commission to do an in-
dependent study designed
to help maximize Jewish
education at the JCC. Other
JCCs have already con-
tacted the Memphis JCC for
material which may be
applied in their own com-
munities.
