The fortress was de-
stroyed by an intense fire
that caused the upper
portion of the walls to col-
lapse. This sealing-off
created the excellent
conditions which
preserved the building
and its contents.

and the site's proximity to
the Acco Valley, suggests
that it was a Phoenician for-
tress built at the end of the
10th Century BCE.
During this period, the
Acco Valley was under the
control of King Hiram of
Tyre and, according to re-
searchers at the University
of Haifa, the site can be
identified as a part of the
biblical "Cabul."
"Cabul" was a region in
northern Israel that con-
tained the 20 cities given —
by King Solomon to King
Hiram — in return for the
materials used in building
the temple and the palace (I
Kings 9:10-14).

The definition of "Cabul"
is "dry land," and it is re-
corded that King Hiram
was not pleased with the
cities he received from King
Solomon.

Cash Shortage

NEW YORK (JTA) —
Mrs. Charlotte Jacobson,
president of the Jewish Na-
tional Fund (JNF), told a
meeting here of the JNF
board that "all Israel-based
charitable agencies that
rely on funding from abroad
have an urgent, even des-
perate need for cash now
that the Israeli government
has initiated its stringent
austerity measures."

Khurvat Rosh Zayit in the
lower Galilee.
The fortress measures
25x25 meters. Within the
fortress is a square build-
ing, with four-foot thick
walls. The building is an
example of the royal archi-
tecture of the period, and
was built of dressed stones
that were laid using a sys-
tem of headers and stretch-
ers. The fortress was sur-
rounded by a six-foot thick
wall.
In excavating the site, the
main sections of the western
wing were uncovered. This
area contained a number of
rooms. Under one of the
rooms a cellar was dis-
covered which had con-
tained different goods
stored in large jars, includ-
ing meat, wine, lentils, and
olive oil. Also found in the
cellar were numerous iron
tools.
