Europe Struggles With 'Spiritual Auschwitz'

ATLANTA (JTA) — The
1.35 million Jews of West-
ern Europe find themselves
in a paradoxical situation.
Living in free, democratic
societies, they struggle
against a "spiritual Au-
schwitz" — loss of identity
through intermarriage,
small families, and aging
population, says Nicole
Goldmann, executive direc-
tor of the European Council
of Jewish Communities.

Pedagogy Class

NEW YORK — The
Organization of Rehabilita-
tion through Training
(ORT) has instituted a
four-year program in teach-
ing at the Bat Yam-Ramat
Joseph High School in Is-
rael.
The first year of the ORT
course concentrates on
manual training and the
use of materials found in
elementary classrooms.
Second year students learn
developmental psychology
and the history of education
before advancing to educa-
tional theory and field work
in the third and fourth years
of the course.
The program was de-
veloped from an existing
course in child care being
taught at the school.
