Legislators Back Jews
Held in Arab Countries

A group of Michigan
legislators have joined in
formally recognizing the
plight of Jews living in Arab
countries.
House Majority Floor
Leader Joe Forbes (D-Oak
Park) said a total of six
legislators had signed a
"Statement of Recognition"
which joins with the upcom-
ing World Organization of
Jews from Arab Countries
conference "in extending
support and encouragement
for equal and just treatment
of the Jewish people who re-
side in Moslem nations."
The statement notes the
plight of Jews in many na-
tions in which they've re-
sided for thousands of years.
"They have signific-
antly contributed to the
economic, social, and
cultural development of
their respective coun-
tries of residence. Since
the state of Israel was
recognized by the United
Nations on Nov. 29, 1947,
in effect, several hundred
thousand Jews . became
refugees in these lands."
The statement recognizes
that many Jews have been
expelled from their native
lands, but many remain as
refugees in Syria, Iran,
Iraq, Yemen and other na-
tions and are treated in-
humanely.
"They have been herded
to refugee camps and have
been persecuted,
humiliated and subjected to
discrimination. In some in-
stances they have even be-
come political hostages."

the statement are Repre-

NEW YORK — The
American Jewish Commit-
tee has expressed opposition
to a pending bill requiring
all public elementary and
secondary schools seeking
to qualify for federal educa-
tion funds to provide "equal
access" to students to eng-
age in religious activities on
school premises.
In a statement submitted
to the Subcommittee on
Elementary, Secondary and
Vocational Education of the
U.S. House of Representa-
tives Committee on Educa-
tion and Labor, the AJ-
Committee termed the bill
"singularly objectionable,
in constitutional as well as
in social policy terms."

Religion Parley
in Fla. Thursday

NEW YORK — What do
Christian schools and
textbooks teach about Jews
and Judaism? Why do syna-
gogue schools teach about
Christianity? Do religious
schools and 'classes paint a
true picture of religions
other than their own, or do
they just perpetuate old
stereotypes?
To examine these and re-
lated questions, a confer-
ence on "Faith Without
Prejudice," headlined by
national prominent
Catholic, Protestant and
Jewish ecumenical leaders,
will be held next Thursday
and Friday in Sarasota, Fla.
Main speakers at the con-
ference will be Rabbi A.
James Rudin, national di-
rector of interreligious af-
fairs of the American
Jewish Committee; Father
John Pawlikowski, profes-
sor of social ethics at the
Catholic Theological Union
of the University of
Chicago, and The Reverend
Dr. David Taylor, pastor of
the Orange Park
Presbyterian Church,
Orange Park, Fla. and a
longtime leader in the Na-
tional and World Councils
of Churches.

The first recorded use of a
Star of David on a
tombstone is in Sixth Cen-
tury Italy.
