Last week I returned from
a 10-day mission to Israel
which was both reassuring
and unsettling. Headed by
Howard Friedman, the ar-
ticulate president of the
American Jewish Commit-
tee, five AJC leaders sought
to obtain a first-hand grasp
of the present situation in
Israel through discussion
with key Israeli govern-
ment and political officials,
as well as with Sephardic
and Palestinian Arab lead-
ers.
On the eve of his depar-
ture for the United States,
Prime Minister Shamir was
forthright in expressing to

us his deep concern over the
emergence of Syria as the
most serious threat to Is-
rael's security. "Assad of
Syria is the latest Arab
leader to perceive himself as
the modern Saladin deter-
mined to undermine Israel's
security," Shamir said.
Assad, the prime minister
added, now has an army of
400,000 men; in two years
he will have 600,000 troops.
He has very good equipment
from the Soviet Union and
he has strong Soviet com-
mitments of support.

Shamir then told our
AJCommittee leaders
that Assad is getting
ready to confront Israel
militarily in 1984. His
strategy calls for domina-

The prime minister then
said that Israel and the
United States must deter
Syria now by preventing its
further aggression.
Shamir stated that he
was reassured by the pre-
sent views of the American
government which sees eye
to eye with Israel on the
need to curtail Syria's ambi-
tions and to strengthen
Lebanon's independence.

Congress on
Israel Humor

"Did you hear the one
about . . .?"
The theme won't be that
corny, but will instead take
a serious tack as the Fouth
International Congress on
Humor, under the auspices
of Tel Aviv University, con-
venes June 10-15 at the As-
toria Hotel in Tel Aviv. The
congress will be preceded by
a colloquium June 6-8.
The opening lecture at
the congress will be deli-
vered by columnist Art
Buchwald, whose topic will
be "Can Humor Survive a
Conference on Humor?"
Ephraim Kishon, Israeli
writer, will speak on "Is
There an Original Israeli
Humor?"

Aguda Cheers
ERA Defeat

NEW YORK — The de-
feat of a proposed Equal
Rights Amendment to the
constitution in the House of
Representatives recently
was applauded as an "im-
portant victory in the age
old battle against the ERA,"
by Rabbi Herman
Neuberger of Baltimore,
chairman of a special
Agudath Israel nationwide
task force against the ERA.
Agudath Israel and other
anti-ERA forces sought to
add several amendments.
The Orthodox group was
particularly concerned
about the drafting of women
and the tax exempt status of
religious schools which
segregate the sexes.
At the same time,
Agudath Israel deplored a
U.S. Senate vote which re-
jected tuition tax credits for
private schools.
