1,740 — for a grand total of
29,060 students.
The total number of
foreign students in the Un-
ited States is 326,300.
The total number of
Arab students listed by
the institute does not take
into account students
from the Persian Gulf
states or from the Mag-
hreb (Libya excepted).
This would add approx-
imately 5,000 more Arab
students for a total of
about 3,600 students.
Israelis have less than 10
percent of that number of
students on American cam-
puses: there are 2,620 Is-
raelis.
Another startling statis-
tic found in the report is

A Contemporary Menora

that Iran is the top supplier
of foreign students, 26,760.
It is not clear from the insti-
tute's analysis whether the
Iranians came before or
after Khomeini.
Anyone who has been on
the large American cam-
puses in recent years knows
that Arab students are in
the vanguard of the most
virulent anti-Israel (and oc-
casionally, when they are
incautious, anti-Semitic)
movements among univer-
sity students.
What is also significant
is that the bulk of the
Arab foreign student
population is found in the
very best American Ivy
League and Big Ten
schools. The Arab gov-
ernments which sponsor
their expatriate students
want them to circulate on
those campuses where
America's political and
industrial leaders are
being trained.
The Arab students in
question have a ready-made
support system which most
other foreign students do
not: the Association of
Arab-American University
Graduates lobbies with
them in and out of the uni-
versity campus to bring
pressure against Israel. The
latter organization is made
up of thousands of Arab
"yordim" whose support for
the Arab cause is uncritical
and powerful.
There are those who will
assert that the Arab pre-
sence on the campus is
neutralized by the massive
Jewish presence there. The
statement belongs to fiction
rather than fact.

This menora by Jerusalem silversmith D. Gumbel
is a contemporary design in silver.
