sidekick . . . plus Ricky
Bianco, owner of Kitchen
Magic degreaser product,
arrived with Jilly.
Party was arranged by
Pat's gal friend, Sweet Suzie
Navarro, Bonds and
Madonna Hady, his assis-
tant manager.
Al Hirt played "Happy
Birthday" on his trumpet
. . Chef Marty Wilk made a
b* ig, beautiful birthday cake
... with one side saying
"Excalibur" and the other
"Kitchen Magic" in which
Pat is also involved . * . The
center said, "Happy Birth-
day Pat Archer."
All proceeds from Pat's
party went to Italian Cul-
tural Center . . . When
Marty asked what he should
serve, Pat said, "Give
everybody hot dogs" . . . But
Marty's menu was sliced
tenderloin or Boston scrod
.. Pat ordered the tender-
loin . . . and got hot dogs in-
stead . . . put on plate by
Marty.
BENJI'S SEAFOOD on
Commerce Lake Road .. .
will close for one week this
Monday . * . and reopen Dec.
2 or Dec. 3 . . . with a wine
bar.

a bit of nostalgia, singing
oldies and goodies from the
Big Band era . . . One of the
high points for the group
this year is their all-new re-
cording, "Just Like Old
Times," on Open Sky Re-
cords, produced by Martin
Scot Kosins on his own OSR
label.
PHIL MARCUS ES-
SER, Detroit musician,
producer, entertainer, is re-
viving both his 1980
critically-acclaimed musi-
cal tribute to composer Kurt
Weill and his wife Lotte
Lenya plus a formerly vac-
ant New Center Theater
with the exclusive 13-week
production, "Labor of Love"
that opened last week.
Located in the shadow of
the Fisher Theater on
Third, just north of West
Grand Boulevard, renamed
New Center Studio Theater
now stars Esser, his fre-
quent musical partner Bar-
bara Bredius, Jonathon
Round and Monika Ziegler.
Jeff Nahan directs "Labor of
Love."
RED DEVIL restaurant
on Fenkell just east of
Greenfield is always an ex-
perience . . . and a very
pleasant one at that .. .
Each time we go to this
favorite eating spot of so
many . . . present, past and
future . . . leaving is the end
of another adventure.
Jack McCarthy and his
"Friday Feast" segment
on a recent Friday 6 p.m.
WXYZ-TV news, showed
Chef Tom Frederick mak-
ing Veal Siciliano . . . and
then interviewing owner
Yahia Mawari.
March will be four years
since Yahia (pronounced
Ya-Ya) took over the re-
staurant which has been a
landmark for good dining at
low prices for about 30 years
. . . Vera Miller, waitress at
Red Devil eight years,
waited on us and did a fine
job . . . everything was so
good.
Yahia's minestrone soup
is thick and loaded with
fresh vegetables . . . His
broiled chicken is already
very well noted . . . The veal
dishes are super . . . and not
too many places make pasta
better than Red Devil (espe-
cially his Fettuccini Al-
fredo) . . . Red Devil is open
seven days a week . . . Mon-
day, Wednesday and
Thursday, 11-10; Friday,
11-11; Saturday, 1-11; and
Sunday, 3-9 . . . certainly a
best bet for very good food at
very low prices.
Reason for that even big-
ger smile on Yahia's face
these days . . . his wife and
two small children are corn-
ing to America.
LOU STERN, president
of Harvey Goldman Co., and
a group of community-
minded Orthodox men who
wanted a high quality
kosher restaurant, are be-
hind the new Center Cafe at
Jewish Community Center
in West Bloomfield . . . It's
under Council of Orthodox
Rabbis' supervision . . . with
seating for 170 in newly-
, (Continued on Page 53)
