JERUSALEM (ZINS) —
Following are the official
demographic figures for the
years 1967 through 1981,
according to Israel's Central
Statistical Bureau:
In 1967, immediately
after the Six-Day War, the
total area under Israeli con-
trol, including the West
Bank and Gaza Strip, con-
tained a population of
3,750,000. Of this number,
2,770,000 dwelt within the
previous pre-war bound-
aries of Israel, and of that
number, some 2,380,000
were Jews. This means that
within the larger bound-
aries of Israel (including the
administered areas) the
Jews represented 63 per-
cent of the total overall
population.
Within Israel's previous
borders (not counting the
administered areas) there
were 393,000 Arabs, repre-
senting 14 percent of Is-
rael's population; or 10 per-
cent of the overall popula-
tion, if we include the ad-
ministered areas.
As for the administered
areas, the Arab popula-
tion on the West Bank

numbered 586,000 and in
the Gaza Strip 381,000.
Together, they consti-
tuted 27 percent of all the
inhabitants of "greater
Israel."
What.changes occurred in
the intervening 14 years, as
of the end of 1981? The
grand total of inhabitants in
"greater Israel" now num-
bered 5,140,000. Of this to-
tal, 3,980,000 were resident
within the pre-June 1967
borders (that is, not count-
ing the West Bank and the
Gaza Strip).
Of the number just cited,
there were (as of the end of
1981) 3,320,000 Jews, or
64.5 percent of the total
population of "greater Is-
rael," including the West
Bank and the Gaza Strip.
The Arab population
within Israel's pre-1967
borders increased in these
14 years to 657,000, roughly
16.5 percent of the total
population (not counting
the West Bank and Gaza).
In that same time span, the
Arab population on the
West Bank increased to a fi-
gure of 707,000 and the
Gaza residents also in-
creased their numbers to a
total of 452,000.
Some men relate what
they think, as what they
know; some men of confused
, memories, and habitual in-
accuracy, ascribe to one
man what belongs to
another; and some talk on
without thought or care.
