Rabbi Seeks German Officer
Who Fed Nazi Camp Inmate

BONN (JTA) — A rabbi
who immigrated to Israel
from the Soviet Union has
called on the German public
to help him find an un-
known Wehrmacht officer
who, the rabbi said, risked
his life to supply bread and
other food to starving in-
mates at a Nazi forced labor
camp during World War II.
According to the West
Berlin daily Morningpost,
Rabbi Zvi-Elimelech
Schoenfeld, recalls the inci-
dent in a book he has writ-
ten on his wartime experi-
ences. He does not know the
name of the humanitarian
officer but is convinced that
he was "an emissary of
God."
Schoenfeld was sent to
Auschwitz in 1944 where he
lost his wife and two sons.

Carter Calls
for 3 Israel
Concessions

AMSTERDAM (JTA) —
Former President Jimmy
Carter has listed three con-
cessions he believes Israel
must make to achieve peace
in the Middle East. In a
television interview last
week with the New York
correspondent of the Dutch
NCRV broadcasting com-
pany, Carter called for Is-
rael's complete withdrawal
from Lebanon, adding that
Syria must do the same.
Secondly, Carter said, Is-
rael must be willing to carry
out in good faith, the grant-
ing of autononomy to the
people of the West Bank and
Gaza Strip. Third, it must
stop establishing Jewish
settlements in the West
Bank, Carter said.
Asked if he saw much
chance for peace to
materialize in the Middle
East, the former President
said that the experience of
past history made this not
very likely. Nevertheless,
he said, in his travels since
leaving office he has found
"an underlying burning de-
sire for peace among all
peoples in the Middle East."

He was among a group of
inmates later sent to a
military camp near the
town of Brzece in Poland.
He recalled that a few
days after his arrival, a
Wehrmacht officer
knocked on the door of
his prison barracks and
told him he would leave
bread and other food on a
window sill each evening.
"When it gets dark, take it
from there and share
with your friends,"
Schoenfeld said the of-
ficer told him, and then
disappeared.
During the eight months
of his incarceration at the
camp, the promised food
was left almost every even-
ing and made possible his
survival and the survival of
the other inmates, the rabbi
said.

THE WRITE WORD

If you find the right gift a chore,
And written words don't flow for you,
Let the "write words" from my pen pour,
To make a portrait fresh and new.
A character sketch I will create
To mark whatever you celebrate.
So let my "Write Words" speak for you,
And convey portraits, Oh so true!
