reement was reached with a
Magen David Adorn delega-
tion to construct a $12 mill-
ion MDA National Blood
Service Center on a site con-
tributed by the Israel
Ministry of Health in
Ramat Gan and to be fi-
nanced through a joint ven-
ture of American Red
Magen David for Israel,
(ARMDI), Friends of MDA
in Great Britain and South
Africa and Canadian Red
Magen David for Israel,
(CARMDI).
The new MDA Blood Ser-
vice Center will house a
blood bank and fractiona-
tion laboratories modeled
on the newly built Ameri-
can Red Cross - New York
Blood Bank Service in Mel-
ville, L.I.
The new installation will
meet the blood needs of all
the hospitals in Israel. Cur-
rently, MDA supplies 100
percent of the blood and
blood products needed by
the Israel Defense Forces as
well as 85 percent of the
needs of all of Israel's hospi-
tals. In addition, MDA must
be able to keep up with the
quantum leaps in scientific
technology, which are con-
stantly increasing the need
for blood and blood pro-
ducts.
The new MDA Blood Ser-
vice Center and Fractiona-
tion Laboratories are espe-
cially designed to provide
improved and enlarged
blood collection facilities;
blood self-sufficiency for Is-
rael's normal peacetime
needs as well as a reserve of
blood for emergencies;
quadrupled blood plasma
using the most advanced
scientific methods; produc-
tion of other blood products;
research facilities for im-
proving fractionation and
other steps in blood proces-
sing and research
laboratories in such fields
as hepatitis and leukemia,
etc.

Navon, Shamir
Lead the Polls
TEL AVIV (ZINS) - A
public opinion poll in Israel
in October, several weeks
after Yitzhak Shamir be-
came prime minister, shows
that Shamir and former
President Yitzhak Navon
are the two most popular
men for Israel's top job.
Some 22.2 percent of the
public preferred Navon for
prime minister. Shamir had
21.2 percent, followed by
Yitzhak Rabin, 9.7 percent,
and David Levy 5.0.
Former Prime Minister
Menahem Begin was
seventh on the list at 3.1 be-
hind Shimon Peres' 4.5 and
Moshe Arens at 3.2. Ezer
Weizman and Ariel Sharon
each received three percent.
