24 Friday, November 25, 1983 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Moscow Jews Swarm Israelis By MOSHE RON The Jewish News Special Israel Correspondent TEL AVIV - Many vis- itors to the Israeli Book Pavilion in Moscow in Sep- tember had the opportunity to learn the history and about political events in Is- rael from the historic "Headline" album of the Is- raeli newspaper Maariv. It shows the events in Israel during the last 30 years. The manager of the pavil- ion, Yaacov Loewinger, had an interesting meeting in the private apartment with a group of Jewish youngsters. They had first said the traditional prayers and then sat down to dinner. Loewinger told them that in Israel, like in Moscow, there is a tendency of youngsters to return to Jewish religious life and tradition. Loewinger was told that there are hundreds of Jewish youngsters in Moscow who say prayers in the synagogue and study the Bible and the Talmud. The youngsters listen to broadcasts of Kol Is- rael Radio though the au- thorities try to disturb the broadcasts. They im- prove their Hebrew from these broadcasts. They found thousands of Jews, including many 7 -youngsters outside the syn- agogue. There were Jews who had walked for three hours to reach the syna- gogue. Rabbi Shajewitz asked for six entrance tickets to the Israeli Pavilion for himself and five yeshiva scholars and for some religious books. One of the Jews, who prayed with zeal, held in his hand a pamphlet of the Is- raeli Pavilion. On the second day of Rosh Hashana a group of Ameri- can Jews came to the syna- gogue. One of them read the Haftorah and he and many Jews cried with emotion.
