The Beirut neighborhood of Wadi al Yahoud (Valley of the Jews) has been hit particularly hard, accord- ing to an article in the Post. The valley, located near the city's Mediterranean coastline, has seen its Jewish population drop from 15,000 in the early 1970s to only 20 or 30 Jewish families today. For those Jews that ha- ven't left, the Post reported, life has become a struggle. "I am alive, but I am alone," Leila Shamm Daoud Srour told thePost. Although things have gotten better since.the in- itial push of the Israeli invasion, Ms. Srour, 70, sees little hope. "Most of the people living here, I never see them," she said. Last summer's invasion brought the war to Ms. Srour's front door. Moslem militiamen darted in and out of the doorways in the neighborhood carrying AK-47 rifles and lugging grenade launchers on their backs. An Israeli blockade shut off. water, food and electricity and nearly every window in the area was shattered by bullets or the nearby explosion of an artil- lery shell. Now, the vegetable shop below her second story win- dow is crammed with goods and a side of meat hangs in the doorway of the butcher- shop up the street. Water is plentiful, the electricity comes on for a few hours a day and many of the broken windows have been re- placed. Ms. Srour is the last member of her family living in Lebanon. Although younger members of her family have moved to Europe and the United States, Ms. Srour insists her home is here, in the valley, even if there isn't much of a home still standing. Spain Will Establish Tie With Israel, Bronfman Says MADRID (JTA) — Spain intends to establish dip- lomatic relations with Is- rael, according to Edgar Bronfman, president of the World Jewish Congress, He was informed- of this by Prime Minister Felipe Gonzalez during their pri- vate meeting at the Monc- loa Palace, Bronfman told reporters at the airport as he ended a two-day official visit to Spain last week. Bronfman was the first world Jewish leader to make such a visit to this country since the end of the Franco era. He said Gon- zalez told him he was com- mitted to the principle of re- lations with Israel and in- tended to fulfill his com- mitments. He added that he gained the impression that Gonzalez already has a date or time in mind to act formally on this matter. He quoted the prime minister as saying that the timing would be dictated by "Spanish national interest only" and thatno pressure Bnai Brith International is one of the United States' largest private sponsors of low-cost nondenomina- tional housing for the el- derly, operating 17 apart- ment projects totaling 3,000 units.
