French government sought
his extradition but the Boli-
vian Supreme Court ruled
that Altmann-Barbie was a
Bolivian citizen and could
not be extradited.
In 1982, however, a new
Bolivian government un-
sympathetic to Barbie took
over, arrested him and
secretly dispatched him to
French territory. He was re-
turned to Lyon where he is
now in jail.
But the story of Klaus
Barbie is not over. As he
awaits trial in Lyon, his de-
fense lawyer, Jacques Ver-
ges, states: "The trial of
Klaus Barbie, if it is ever
held, will be like a mirror
that I will hold up to French
society to show it to itself as
it is."

the results of a used Yiddish
book collection drive con-
ducted by Detroit's Sholem
Aleichem Institute.
The organization col-
lected more than 3,000 Yid-
dish volumes and shipped
them to the national center
as part of a nationwide
drive; More than 200,000
Yiddish books have been
collected nationally.
In October, book center
executive director Aaron
Lansky spoke in Detroit at a
Sholem Aleichem oneg
Shabat, describing the revi-
val of Yiddish in the U.S.
and the work of the Na-
tional Yiddish Book Center.

The oneg was followed
on Sunday morning with
a "packing party," in
which the Detroit vol-
umes were prepared for
shipment. Volunteers in-
cluded Molly Kaplansky,
Bernard Friedman, Bet-
te and Herb Schein,
David Moskovitz, Rose
Roth and Mildred Young.

Sholem Aleichem In-
stitute is continuing to col-
lect Yiddish books for the
center. For information, call
President Bette Schein,
553-7040.

According to tradition,
Ezra the Scribe began the
practice of awarding seven
aliyot on the Sabbath. Some
synagogues increase the
number so that more people
can be honored.
