Students at United Heb-
rew Schools High School are
now able to test their Heb-
rew language skills on -
Apple He computers.
A variety of Jewish edu-
cational software has been
introduced into UHS clas-
srooms. Some programs use
clever animation and
graphics to assist students'
understanding of the prin-
ciples of word formation in
Hebrew. Quizzes test stu-
dents' knowledge of basic
Judaism and Hebrew. Vid-

Dr. Paul Feinberg, presi-
dent of UHS, has long been
a proponent of electronic
technology in the clas-
sroom. An Educational
Technology Taskforce,
chaired by Dr. Barbara
Goodman, has been gather-
ing a library of the most ad-
vanced Jewish educational
materials to aid classroom
teachers and provide a more
exciting curriculum for stu-
dents.
"UHS is committed to
continued development
of quality Jewish educa-
tion through creative
new programming," said
Dr. Feinberg. --
Dr. Harold Mathis, a
member of the Educational
Technology Taskforce,
began writing computer
software for the benefit of
his own children. He has
since written three "user
friendly" programs which
require no previous compu-
ter experience. Once the
disk is inserted, the on-
screen program provides
step-by-step instructions.

quiz tests knowledge of

Students use the compu-
ter programs to catch up on
work missed or to jump
ahead. Most of them have
been trained to use the
Apple computer at their
public schools. Other
Jewish educational institu-
tions have purchased Dr.
Mathis' programs, which
are now available nation-
ally.
UHS faculty member
Mrs. Tamar Traub, who
received her master's de-
gree in computer science,
is currently writing prog-
rams for elementary
school students. These
will be incorporated into
the curriculum in the
near future.
Video cassette recording
equipment has also been
utilized in the UHS clas-
srooms. A videotape of the
Book of Genesis is used by
high school teachers Phyllis
Domstein and Renee Wohl
as a motivating tool to get
students involved in thq,
text. The visual experience
of seeing the characters in
their natural setting trig-
gers the students' imagina-
tions. They see the ancient
Near East — the desert, the
camels, the well at the
center of town. These scenes
become a part of each stu-
dent's memory book.
"The videotape is not a
substitute for the Book- of
Genesis," cautions Mrs.
Wohl. "We are still people of
the Book. But the visual
impact of seeing the story
come to life, with the actors
speaking biblical Hebrew,
aids the students' under-
standing of ancient Jewish
culture." Dr. Gerald Teller
also uses the Genesis vid-
eotape for his adult courses
at the Midrasha.
The use of video equip-
ment provides an opportun-
ity for students and'parents
to experience Jewish educa-
tion together. To this end,
UHS will be offering their
library of videotapes and
computer software to UHS
students and their parents,
and to other Jewish educa-
tional institutions.
Honesty is one part of
eloquence. We persuade
others by being in earnest
ourselves.
