Albert Vorspan, vice president of the Union of American Hebrew Congre- gations (UAHC), told the 3,000 delegates attending its biennial assembly in Houston that Jackson "will ONE LADY AIN BAND piano or portable organ with rhythm box 353-9566 Wholesale Outlet Party & Catering Supplies PAPERWORLD plates, cups, cutlery, table coverings paper, plastic, styrofoam color coordinated, patterns Party decorations & accessories 12345 Schaefer Hours M-F 9 am-5 pm Saturday 9:30-1:30 (2 blocks S. of the Jeffries) 491-2384 ELECTROLYSIS WORKS! The Reform Jewish leader declared that Jews should refuse to turn the Jackson campaign into a black-Jewish confrontation. "We and the rest of the re- sponsible Jewish commun- ity should repudiate and condemn the vigilante cam- paign of the Jewish Defense League thugs who have an- nounced they will disrupt Jackson's political rallies," Vorspan declared. He ad- ded: "Does that mean we should ignore his views and his record, especially his unconscionable theatrical embrace of Yasir Arafat and his ties to Arab groups, which stirred deep and jus- tifiable concern among thoughtful Jews? Decidedly not. Jesse Jackson should be subjected to tough and sharp scrutiny, exactly like all other candidates, and on issues across the board, not only on the Middle East. "To exempt him from judgment because he is black would be sup- remely patronizing. To seek to deligitimize his campaign and to hold him to a separate stan- dard would be racism. Jesse is a showman and an opportunist, but he has become a symbol of black aspirations in our time." Vorspan compared the Jackson candidacy to that of John Kennedy in 1960, in- sofar as Jesse Jackson chal- lenges the white monopoly on the White House, as JFK did the Protestant monopoly more than 20 years ago. "In so doing, he will help achieve a more open society in which even the White House will some- day become an equal oppor- tunity employer." Election Results The local election results last week included the fol- lowing: In Southfield, incumbent city council member Vicki Goldbaum received the most votes to retain her seat on the council. Challenger Sidney Lantz finished fifth in the council race, missing election by 26 votes out of nearly 10,000 cast. He is considering a re-count. In Oak Park, incum- bent Mayor Charlotte Rothstein tallied nearly 2,700 votes to challenger Norman Goldman's 346. In- cumbent city council mem- bers Marshall Disner and Gerald Naftaly were unop- posed. In Mt. Clemens, incum- bent Mayor Ada Eisenfeld was elected to a second term.
