Institute of Religion
(HUC-JIR) has embarked
on an expansion of its
Jerusalem campus with the
groundbreaking for three
new buildings this fall.
The new buildings will
include a classroom center,
a library and a building for

research. The Jerusalem
campus, which is marking
its 20th anniversary in
1983, is one of four HUC-
JIR facilities. Other HUC-

David Handleman has
been elected president of
United Jewish Charities,
senior agency of the Jewish
Welfare Federation that
manages communal prop-
erty and endowment funds.
Former vice president of
UJC - and past chairman of
the Federation Capital
Needs Division, Handle-
man was elected by the di-
rectors of UJC to succeed
Joseph H. Jackier.
Handleman chaired the
1979 and 1980 Allied
Jewish Campaigns • and
serves on the Jewish Wel-
fare Federation Executive
Committee, as well as the
Max M. Fisher Jewish
Community Foundation.
He has sat on a number of
Federation committees and
held national directorships
with the Council of Jewish
Federations, BIAS (Hebrew
Immigrant Aid Society),
American Jewish Commit-
tee and National Jewish
Hospital in Denver.
In 1980, Handleman and
his wife Marion were hon-
ored with the naming of a
forest by the Jewish Na-
tional Fund.
He also is active in the
general community, serv-
ing as a director of United
Foundation, as well as
the Friends of Modern
Art at the Detroit Insti-
tute of ArU Interlochen
Music Camp and the De-
troit Symphony Or-
chestra.
Elected along with Hand-
leman at the UJC meeting
were Samuel Frankel,
Graham A. Orley and
Frieda Stollman, vice presi-
dents; Samuel Schiff, trea-
