perience from Pierre in New
York and Ritz-Carlton in
Chicago.
Hotel Pontchartrain run
by Sylvia Gershenson, has
427 rooms including 36
suites . . . 12 separate meet-

HAROLD AND Ro-
salie Dean were playing
golf in Florida, and after
shooting 18 holes went to a
country club bar for popcorn
and wine . . . The gal behind
the bar told them of a club
member who had just
opened a 32-flavor popcorn
shop . . . Harold and Rosalie
drove straight over to sam-
ple this unique product .. .
Much to their surprise (shop
opened only a few days ear-
lier), the place was jammed
with customers.
They sampled the pop-
corn . . . loved it . . . and
brought some home to
friends in Detroit for their
opinions . . . Everyone
thought it was fabulous .. .
Harold and Sanford Roth,
brothers-in-law barrister
partners, flew to Dallas,
Tex., where headquarters of
The Corn Popper was lo-
cated, to find out about a
franchise.
Oct. 18, 1983, The Corn
Popper opened at Evergreen
Plaza, Evergreen and 12
Mile . . . first franchise lo-
cated in Michigan although
The Corn Popper has shops
in 25 other states.

Local Corn Popper
partnership is off to a
very successful start for
Harold and Rosalie Dean
and Sanford (Sandy) and
Judy Roth . . . It isn't un-
usual to see all four of
them working Saturdays
and Sundays in the shop.

Folks are invited to visit
the store and sample some
of the 32 unique flavors .. .
bubblegum, peanut butter,
chocolate, pizza, taco, bbq,
sour cream and onion,
amaretto, banana, cinna-
mon, etc. . . . It's a very in-
teresting experience!
That black popcorn is
licorice . . . and there's also
mint, cherry, coconut, cof-
fee, honey, lemon, straw-
berry, watermelon, pineap-
ple, raspberry . . . among
others.
BACK IN THE early
1920s, Kaffman Cohen
started the Superior
Smoked Fish Co. in the
Eastern Market . . . Son Be-
rnie was in it 20 years, join-
ing dad after World War II
. . . until leaving to be with
father-in-law Norman Cot-
tler at Dexter-Davison
Market . . . (married to
Norm's daughter, Sylvia).
Today, he has Bagel Deli
Produce on Maple and Far-
mington Rd., where smoked
fish is still the big thing .. .
Family hasn't gone away
from it . . . and continues
the smoked fish business
that Kaffman Cohen
started.
