Red Cross Says Israeli
POWs Are in Good Health

TEL AVIV (JTA) — Rep-
resentatives of the Interna-
tional Red Cross visited six
Israeli prisoners of war held
by the Palestine Liberation
Organization in Tripoli,
Lebanon, last week where
Yasir Arafat and his
loyalists were making a de-
sperate last stand against
attacking PLO dissidents
backed by Syria.
According to reports from
Geneva, the six Israelis are
well and are in the hands of
pro-Arafat elements. But
the Red Cross has not been
able to visit two other Is-
raeli POWs held captive by
Ahmed Jibril's Popular
Front for the Liberation of
Palestine-General Com-
mand, an extremist, anti-
Arafat terrorist group
under the PLO umbrella.
IRC spokesman Jean-
Jacques Kurz said those two
prisoners were last visited
by the Red Cross on Sept.
16.

Kurz told Israel Radio
today that the IRC has a
14-member team in
Tripoli which is con-
cerned mainly with the
10,000 refugees from the
PLO's civil war. About 60
percent of them are
Lebanese whom the IRC
is supplying with food
and blankets.

JERUSALEM (JNI) —
Jews in America and the
Jewish community in Israel
differ widely on some politi-
cal issues, according to a re-
cent survey conducted by Is-
raeli election - analyst
Hanoch Smith.
A large percentage of Is-
raelis saw public criticism
of their country's policies by
U.S. Jews as harmful and
dangerous while Americans
generally felt such criticism
was beneficial, the survey
revealed.
Meanwhile, according to
the poll, .70 percent of the
Israelis who responded op-
posed yerida (emigration of
Jews from Israel to other
countries). Only 16 percent
of the American Jews
shared this opinion with the
Israelis.

Meanwhile, Israeli sec-
urity forces are investigat-
ing a bomb explosion which
killed two Shiite Moslem
residents of the south Leba-
non village of Tibnin Sun-
day. The Israelis are trying
to determine whether the
bombing was motivated by
a private feud or was
another in a series of at-
tacks on members of the
local home guard in south
Lebanon villages.

Shamgar Leads
Supreme Court

' JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Justice Meir Shamgar has
assumed the presidency of
Israel's Supreme Court,
succeeding Yitzhak Kahan
who has reached the statut-
ory retirement age of 70. At
58, Shamgar is the youngest
president of Israel's highest
judicial body. The presi-
dency automatically goes to
the justice with the longest
tenure.
Shamgar earned a lauda-
ble reputation as Judge Ad-
vocate General of the Israel
Defense Force in the early
1960s and later as Attorney
General in the early and
middle 1970s, prior to his
appointment to the Sup-
reme Court.
Although he was a
member of former Premier
Menahem Begin's Irgun in
the pre-state period, Sham-
gar was named Attorney
General by a Labor gov-
ernment, an indication of
the high esteem he com-
manded which transcended
politics.
