and the Jews," will speak at

history at Columbia Uni-
versity. He is fluent in

sian, French, German,

and his Book Fair talk

"Tsar Nicholas I and the
JeWs" describes an impor-
tant turning point in mod-
ern Jewish history, the
transformation of Jewish
society that took place in
Russia under the reign of
Nicholas I (18254855).
During this period' the
Jews were thrust from their
insular existence on the
margins of society into the
maelstrom of Russian - life
and politics, a situation.
from which, as the author
* * *
concludes, "they have yet to
emerge."

Vishniac Guest
of Book Fair
-
More than 500 people
were present Monday night
at the Jewish Book Fair to
hear and see Roman Vis-
hniac recreate a world, now
gone, where most of the
people who heard his words
had their origins.
Dr.
Vishniac
also
employed a powerful tool —
hisphotographs served as
witness and recorder of "A
Vanished World." Many of
the slides he showed were
from his book, pictures
taken of men, women and
children just before the
Holocaust consumed them.
What made this evening
special was that the power
of the book and its message
rests with the author him-
self. His courage, his deter-
mination, his love for the
Jewish People propelled
him lika man possessed.
One of the most touch-
ing moments in an even-
ing packed with emotion
was when Dr. Vishniac
confessed that it was dif-
ficult for him to look at
his own pictures. He
knew each person he
photographed. "I em-
braced each of the chil-
dren," he quietly said.
It was as if he were speak-
ing to each person in the. au-
dience individually when he
added, "I couldn't tell them
why I wanted to photograph
them. I had to make up
reasons. I knew they were
condemned."
