THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS 13.MILE RD. Local Beth Din Stands Ready Editor, The Jewish News: The Purely Commentary column of Mr. Philip Slomovitz in your most re- cent issue follows strongly The Jewish News tradition of being a source of valuable efficacious information and counsel to the Jewish com- munity. We refer specifi- cally to his lead article, "What has happened to the tradition of the Beth Din?," an urgent call for all Jewish litigants and arbitrators to make use of the judicious of- fices of the Jewish court sys- tem to solve their differ- ences. The Council of Orthodox Rabbis beth din, in keeping with the traditional respon- sibilities of rabbis and scho- lars to maintain a central court system in every city and town has serviced this community for the last 55 years, handling matters of all levels of concern and urgency to the individuals and institutions of Detroit Jews. We remain eager in our quest to use the wisdom of Torah and Talmud as the one system that has main- tained the unity of the Jewish community throughout the millenia to handle the problems of a modern nation. Our door always remains open. We share the sentiments of Mr. Slomovitz in decrying the individual and com- munal tragedy of the Akiva strike. We have been ap- proached at different times by selected representatives of both sides of this particu- lar dispute for the use of our offices. If all parties will agree to the abidance of our counsel we would be more than anx- ious to help ameliorate this unfortunate situation as we have done with so many others. Ahron Meir, managing director of United Mizrachi Bank, says Israel's economic problems and the drop in value of bank shares has caused no substantial withdrawals either in Israel or abroad. 12 MILE RD.
