Some months ago I had the pleasure of reviewing his latest book, "Hidden from View and Other Stories." Having liked the favorable review, Mr. Gel- lin was prompted to write in a letter to Mr. Philip Slomovitz, 'editor and pub- lisher of The Jewish News, "I would consider it a privilege to contribute a number of books ("Hidden from View") through you and Mrs. Stern to various charitable organizations in your area . . . I have made such contributions in the New York area and (it) will help give significance to my 83rd birthday of July 20, close enough to the July 29 review." Not wishing to miss an opportunity to distribute this fine book, Mr. Slomovitz and I came up with a plan, but we needed help. Mae Weine, librarian at Beth Ab- raham Hillel Moses, put me in touch with Sarah Bell, librarian at Mid- rasha College of Jewish Studies, who kindly ag- reed to receive the car- ton of 32 books and make them available to other Jewish libraries in Metropolitan Detroit at the next meeting of the Jewish Library Associa- tion of Metropolitan De- troit. 4 ft. openings $180.00 Installed 5 ft. openings $190.00 Installed 6 ft. openings $240.00 Installed Lowest Prices On All Types of Mirrored Walls, Furniture, Bars, Cubes, Etc. This has been a most exhilarating and gratifying project for me. Not only did I learn of the existence of the Jewish Library Association of Metropolitan Detroit and get to meet a number of its members, I also had the ple- asure of collaborating on a most worthwhile endeavor with Mr. Slomovitz who was most supportive every step of the way. In addition, it was gratifying to receive such unstinting cooperation from Sarah Bell, without whom the project could not have succeeded. But my biggest joy has been corresponding with Mr. Gellin, our generous author. Mr. Gellin's gesture of kindness to our commun- ity belies the title of his book. While the short stories within its covers deal with subject matter "hidden from view," his wil- lingness to share his creativity reflects an exemplary thoughtfulness which is not "hidden" but very visible indeed. It is good to know that by distributing "Hidden from View and Other Stories" countless lives will be touched and enriched by Mr. Gellin's tender stories. I was warmly received and given time on the agenda to make my presen- tation. There was unanim- ous enthusiasm for the pro- ject, and I am happy to re- port that the distribution of the book is well under way. The librarians each agreed to take a copy to their own library and many took addi- tional copies for their col- leagues who were not pre- sent that evening. As of this writing, com- plimentary copies of "Hid- den from View and Other Stories" have been distri- buted to libraries at Wayne State University, Univer- sity of Michigan, Michigan State University as well as Shaarey Zedek, Beth Achim, Beth Abraham Hillel Moses, Bnai Moshe, Beth Israel (Ann Arbor), Oak Park Library, Temple Israel, Hillel Day School, Beth Shalom, Jewish Com- munity Center, T'chiyah, NEW YORK (JTA) — Temple Beth El, Adat Shalom, Midrasha, Bnai Memorial awards in mem- David, Bnai Israel (Petos- ory of the late Sen.
