Jewish people." He praised
Zuckerman's commitment
to higher education in Israel
as a whole and to the He-
brew University in particu-
lar, saying, "If the future of
Israel depends on quality,
we must see to it that the
next generation is prepared
to carry on that. quality."

Responding, Zucker-
man said, "This univer-
sity, in the great city of
Jerusalem, through its
teaching, research, pro-
grams for students from
abroad, publications and
ambassadors sent into
many communities, has
been a unifying force in
Jewish life." He and his
wife, he said, were proud
to join their names with
the university, and in
some way to help the uni-
versity play its part in so
many great and challeng-
ing efforts.

His own training in busi-
ness, he recalled, had been
"through the scientific
process of trial and error ; "
but if his efforts here would
help tomorrow's Israeli
business leaders avoid
costly errors, the support
would be very meaningful.
Zuckerman noted the
many ways in which, apart
from educating students,
the university served the
people of Israel and people
in other lands who ask for
help. "The Hebrew Univer-
sity does indeed have a uni-
versal mission. It
epitomizes the noblest aspi-
rations and visions of the
Jewish people for the ad-
vancement of the Jewish
spirit and for universal im-
provement."
At the conclusion of the
ceremony, the party
gathered in Zuckerman
Hall to watch the Zucker-
mans unveil the inscription.
The hall, circular in shape
and illuminated by
skylights, is a gathering
place opening to the faculty
offices. It affords a comfort-
able setting for informal
meetings of students and fa-
culty members.

U.S. Civil Rights
Body Prompts
NCCJ Concern

NEW YORK — Concern
about the futu-re viability of
the United States Civil
Rights Commission has
prompted the president of
the National Conference of
Christians and Jews
(NCCJ), Jacqueline G.
Wexler, to appeal to Repub-
licans and Democrats to
work together in preserving
the integrity of the Com-
mission.
"The United States Civil
Rights Commission is one of
the important symbols of
our nation's commitment to
equality for all citizens,"
Mrs. Wexler said. "Private
organizations committed to
civil rights have a vested in-
terest in the health and in-
dependence of the Commis-
sion."
