THE. DETROIT 1ElyISH,NEyis Rabbi Menahem Kasher Dies JERUSALEM (JTA) — Rabbi Menahem Kasher, one of the foremost Jewish scholars of this century, died last week at age 89. Rabbi Kasher, born into a Hasidic fainily in Poland, achieved a remarkable reputation as a young man for his scholarship and writ- ing. In the years im- mediately following World War I he edited a Torah periodical called "Degel Hatorah" ("Torah Flag") in which many of the leading rabbis of Europe regularly contributed. In the late.1920s he came to Palestine, upon the in- struction of his Hasidic leader, the Rabbi of Gur, to establish the first Hasidic yeshiva here, Sfat Emet. It was then that Rabbi Kasher conceived the* idea that was to become his life's work. By the time of his death 87 vol- umes had been published but it is still not quite finished. A few months ago he chaired a conference in London on Soviet Jewry attended by many of the Western world's most eminent Sovietologists. Mr. Schapiro's work, pub- lished - first in 1960, was "The Communist Party of the Soviet Union." Revised in 1970, it remains the de- finitive work on that subject in any language.
