Rubinstein's Jerusalem Burial TEL AVIV (ZINS) -- • Judy Verona, Eleanor Heyman 851-7022 • World renowned pianist • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • sr or • Artur Rubinstein had I I Charles Growe, Gerald Cor- lin, Lawrence Hyman, Ger- son Horton, Sam Lipson and Mark Segal, trustees. Officers will be installed at a dinner-dance Dec. 11 at Adat Shalom Synagogue. I I I I I I I I I I willed that he be buried in Jerusalem. Why did this not come to pass? The Hebrew daily Haaretz says that during his last visit to Israel Rubinstein told friends that he wished to be buried on a mountaintop in Jerusalem. He was advised that the custom in Israel is not to make interment of the dead outside of cemeteries. An official of the Jewish National Fund disclosed that he had offered a gravesite to the artist on the Mount of Olives and that Is- rael would regard his burial there as a great honor. Rubinstein declined. For whatever reasons, according to Haaretz, Rubinstein did not want to be buried in a Jewish cemetery. He sub- sequently changed his will and requested cre- mation and the scattering of his ashes over the hills of Jerusalem. He was in fact cremated, but his ashes were never scattered over the hills of Jerusalem because that would violate Jewish reli- gious law, according to Haaretz. Flocking to Egypt TEL AVIV (ZINS) — Ac- cording to the newspaper Yediot Ahronot, "If Egypt does not want trade rela- tions with us (Israel), so be it. If they are not interested in tourism ties and full dip- lomatic relations, so be it. "But when Israelis ignore all this and flock en masse to Egyptian cities and re- sorts — that is a farce."
