This conclusion is made in an Institute of Jewish Af- fairs research report by Dr. Raphael Israeli, senior lec- turer in Islamic civilization and Chinese history at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Of particular concern is the number of publications which appeared during the period based on the Pro- tocols of Zion and blood libel themes. In Dr. Israeli's view, the existence of these anti- Semitic publications places "a long, dark tunnel at the end of the light which the peace treaty has kindled." Sarah Caldwell to Direct New Israel Opera Company NEW YORK — The newly organized Israel Opera Company under the direction of noted opera di- rector and conductor Sarah Caldwell will launch its in- augural season next March with four touring prod- uctions of one-act operas. Efr aim Margolin, president of the American- Israel Opera Foundation, announced that the four operas are Mozart's "The Impresario" (with a revised Hebrew libretto based on ideas suggested by Ms. Caldwell); Vaughan Williams' "Riders to the Sea"; Martinu's "Comedy on the Bridge," written for the Czech Radio in 1935; and Menotti's "The Old Maid and the Thief," another radio opera written in 1939. Ms. Caldwell was in Is- rael this past summer to conduct a six-week work- shop for singers, conductors and directors. Ms. Caldwell has been assisted in Israel by several leading Ameri- can vocal coaches, including Joan Dorneman of the Met- ropolitan Opera. In cooperation with Margolin, Ms. Caldwell has initiated a schol- arship program for Is- raeli singers, directors and conductors to do in- ternships under her di- rection at the Opera Company of Boston.
