lar cast, gives his all to the
audience at the Norman
Thomas Theater in his Yid-
dish presentation of "Ah
Freiliks" ("Let There Be
JoY").
His inexhaustible range
covers nostalgic cantorial
solos, clever ensemble
spoofs of grand opera, to the
_ sentimental staples of mus-
ical comedy. It is all done
with humor, exuberance,
inventiveness and infecti-
ous Yiddishkeit.
From the arousing, de-
lightful overture brilliantly
conceived by William
Gunther with klezmer high-
lights to a grand finale- paen
to nationalism in Israel, the
audience is completely
enraptured. Even the origi-
nal backdrops are cleverly
evocative by sensitive
suggestion of a loveable era
in Yiddish theater domi-
nated by the divine Kessler
and Adler.
The continuity is felicit-
ously provided in happily
apt rhyme by the gifted
Miriam Kressyn. If not the
Nobel or Pulitzer Prize,
surely there must be the
equivalent of the. Tony
awards for Miriam Kressyn
and Ben Bonus!
