Friday, November 11, 1983 33 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Petluck Awards from HIAS Danny Raskin's The Best of Everything IT'S CALLED one of the best kept secrets in the eat- ery business . . . This is Marc's Family Inn on Grand River and Seven Mile, west of Telegraph . . . across from Redford Community Hospi- tal and next to the Earl Scheib shop. Seating is for 94 in two intimate rooms with green carpeting and green over- hanging plants to set off the plain but cozy restaurant becoming so noted for its good food and low prices. Owners Marc Bowser and Jim Moorhouse took over a former Lums . . . and from _their Marc's Cafe seating 30 at another site, opened this spot, renamed it Marc's Family Dining . . . and have been gaining a hi hl reputation. Besides their family restaurant, they also have the former Bistro locale in back . . . with ac- cess from the restaurant ... which is called Marc's - Back Door, seating 130 ... cocktails, five-piece band ... and deep-dish pizza Marc and Jim call the best anywhere ... Also salads, sandwiches and everyday specials like charbroiled N.Y. strip, baby beef liver, fish and chips, charbroiled Walleye, jumbo battered shrimp, Saturday night prime rib feast, Sunday chicken dinner, etc. -- The menu at Marc's Fam- ily Dining has almost 200 items on six pages . . . easy to read . . . including nachos, deep-fried zucchini, 14 salads, homemade soups, chili, eight deli sandwiches, 17 regular sandwiches, 12 beefburgers, five hot dogs (one is grilled kielbasa with grilled onion and green pepper), homemade onion rings, over 20 different breakfasts, about 22 ' - omelettes, 19 beverages be- sides beer, wine and cocktails, six galettes (example: Galette A La Basqaise, green pepper rings and chopped tomato sauteed in garlic butter, topped with Swiss cheese. Served with salad garnish and Bernaise sauce). Lunch or dinner entrees include 19 meat dishes and eight seafood plates (even APA from the Philippines, chopped fresh shrimp stir- fried in garlic with diced chicken, soy sauce and brown sugar . . . served on a Philippine flat cake with lettuce). The prices are unbeliev- ably low . . . and the food so very good according to so - many people. Marc's Family Dining even has its own pastry chef ... with homemade pastries listed on a menu , board . . . (first time ever I heard of a restaurant whose highest priced meal is $6.95, except for $8.95 king cut steak, hav- ing its own pastry chef). Marc's Family Dining has been a well-kept secret .. . until now. SINCE CLOSING his restaurant on E. Eight Mile in 1975, Ernie Palombo has been in retirement five -times . . . He is now daytime host for John and Pete Ginopolis at their Ginopolis' spot on Middle- belt and 12 Mile. EVER SEE the owner outside cleaning the sidewalk in front of his res- taurant? . . . There's Manny Farao, outdoors at his little 29 seater Manny's Deli on W. Nine Mile Rd. just west of Woodward in Ferndale, with wire brushes attached to his floor polishing machine . . . wearing gloves . . . making that sidewalk as clean as he can . . . to coin- cide with the very spotless eatery run by Manny and wife Chris. Then it's back behind the newly-enclosed sandwich counter (to keep dirt and dust away from his cutting board) and slicing rye by hand . . . Their bread, by the way, is three-quarters baked when Manny and Chris get the loaves . . . and then finished off by them- selves. This used to be Sammy's Corned Beef 'n Rye . . . The big yellow awning in front says Manny's . . and a huge neon sign back by the 300- car municipal lot with up to three hours meter time has his name inside bright yel- low lights. The place is spotless .. . not a single thumbprint on the very clear show- case ... gleaming stain- less steel everywhere ... and pretty fresh flowers from Kevin's Floral Ex- pressions on W. Nine Mile in Ferndale on all tables, booths and by each counter seat. Manny and Chris have remodeled their little place . .. It's so nice and bright now, with booths, chairs and counter stools a bright orange to replace dark- brown . . . new blonde For- mica is on all the tops and counter . . . while a beauti- ful drop ceiling makes for cozy and stylish decor. Manny's Deli, between F & M and Secretary of State, next door to Kresge's, has become the favorite of many . . . local celebrities in- cluded . . . The little momma-and-poppa opera- tion that produces five homemade soups, chili and about 35 sandwiches plus some hot dishes is so very clean . . . and everything so tasty. Like the deli days of yes- teryears, Manny still gives people pieces of whatever he is cutting . . Many businesses around . . . with Manny and Chris soon very busy on sandwiches and soups for carry-out that be- gins to boom with the weather . . . plus trays for the holidays . . . But they're from the old school . . . The customers inside for sure won't be neglected . . . not now or ever.
