TEL AVIV (ZINS) — The
newspaper Haaretz
editorialized that the elec-
tion of Yitzhak Shamir to
succeed Menahem Begin
was a victory of Herut's old
guard. Haaretz said the
Herut old guard feared that
if David Levy had defeated
Shamir within the party,
the old guard would have
lost its influence.
The paper said that is
why the old guard sup-
ported a "weak, compromise
candidate."
Rather an honest slap
than a false kiss.
