OUTSTANDING LUCITE DESIGNS In 1967 Jack Gourman decided to publish a manual which critically evaluated universities and colleges in the United States. He decided on this enterprise because he be- lieved that the conventional accrediting documents were inadequate and that they presented faulty evalua- tions of institutions of higher learning. In his initial survey he found that nearly 1,000 universities and colleges which had previously re- ceived various forms of aca- demic accreditation were 20% SALE BRAS PANTS GIRDLES SLIPS WARM GOWNS ROBES VALOUR SUITS LOUNGEWEAR 7 •-utie•ie etc. SALE ENDS_ NOV. 30TH 222 E. For the last 16 years Gourman has been pub- lishing his own manuals relating to quality uni- versity education and the contents are both explo- sive and instructive. Parents and students concerned about selecting the proper university environment should obtain Gourman's rating of both undergraduate and graduate programs. They can be obtained from Na- tional Education Standards, 1 Wilshire Bldg., 624 S. Grand Ave., Suite 1210, Los Angeles, Calif. 90017. One of the most extraor- dinary revelations in the Gournman reports is that there are perhaps not more than 150 universities and colleges in North America which stand up to the exact- ing criteria which Gourman imposes in his selection procedure. Those criteria include research and teaching profiles of the faculty, student accessibil- ity, campus facilities and li- brary holdings. With regard to under- graduate programs Gour- man judges Cornell to be first in agriculture, the University of Michigan first in nursing, New York Uni- versity first in physical therapy, Pennsylvania first in accounting and MIT first in computer science. MIT also leads the list in electrical engineering, while Yale ranks number one in philosophy. Har- vard is first in music, Russian and Spanish. The University of California at Berkeley is number one in botany and genetics. As far as graduate and professional programs are concerned, Harvard ranks first in architecture, Columbia in comparative IDF Officers Criticize U.S. Marine Methods TEL AVIV (JTA) — Senior officers of the Israel Defense Forces who took courses at Marine war col- leges in the United States are critical of the way the Marines are taught to adapt to combat situations, the newspaper Maariv reported last week. According to Maariv, the Israeli officers say the Marine command lacked "vision and imagination" and was too prone to "go by the book." That basic atti- tude did not allow the Marines to adapt quickly to specific circumstances not spelled out in military textbooks, the IDF officers claimed. They suggested that the Marines tended to rely too heavily on massive air or artillery support to "soften up" the enemy, a tactic that could not be applied to their mission or situation in Be- frut. literature, and, Yale in French studies. Harvard is first in philosophy and Spanish. The number one law school is Harvard, fol- lowed by U-M, Yale, the University of Chicago and University of California, Berkeley.
