The Hebrew Free Loan
Association had a humble
beginning in 1895 when it
was granted a corporate
charter for the purpose of
helping the needy of the
community. The aim and
purpose of extending a help-
ing hand, without the
thought of reward for the
favor extended, has at all
times been kept in the fore-
ground.
The Hebrew Free Loan
Association's philosophy is
based on the Torah: that
"thou shalt not exact inter-
est from the needy among
us." Time after time, the
Hebrew Free Loan served as
a bridge between failure
and success, between hope
and despair, and has safely
carried families from de-
pendence to independence.

Other members of the
board of directors are sons
and daughters of parents
who also served unselfishly,
willingly and faithfully,
finding their reward in the
knowledge that their efforts
and energies have made the

Several appointments
were announced at the con-
ference, including Irving M.
Levine, who was named di-
rector of national affairs;
Rabbi Marc H. Tanenbaum,
chosen director of interna-
tional relations; and Rabbi
James Rudin, who was
named director of interreli-
gious affairs by the AJ-
Committee.

.

During the meeting, the
committee hosted seven
Israelis ranging in age
from 25-37 as part of a
continuing program in
which emerging , leaders
on the Israeli scene visit
Jewish leaders in the
United States.

The five men and two
women, chosen by the AJ-
Committee Institute on
American Jewish-Israeli re-
lations, toured New York
before attending the Meet-
ing in Philadelphia.
An AJCommittee study
on human rights by Dr.
Vratislav Pechota was also
released during the
Philadelphia meeting.
The study, "The Right to
Know One's Human Rights:
A Road Toward Individual
Freedom," sets forth a pro-
gram of action to advance
the understanding of
human rights throughout
the world and promote the
observance of such rights by
all governments.

and underwrote part of
these demands. It has
served the community,
serving the needy of all
creeds, through periods of
adversity and prosperity,
with loans for necessity and
for opportunity.
Funds have been lent for
weddings and Bnai Mitzva,
medical bills, funerals and
grave markers, in good
times and in bad.
Today, Hebrew Free Loan
agencies are located across
the United States and
Canada, each dedicated to
the same noble and practi-
cal objectives. In June 1982,
a long overdue event took
place with the formation of
the Association of Hebrew
Free Loans. Henry Leopold,
a past president of the De-

president of the national
Association.
