Mr. and Mrs. Jacob
Birnbaum of Newton,
Mass., announce the
engagement of their daugh-
ter, Ruth Freda, to Rabbi
Daniel Lee Pernick, son of
Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence R.
Pernick of Southfield.
Miss Birnbaum was
graduated from Brandeis
University with a Bachelor
of Arts degree in psychology
and completed the educa-
tion program there. She also
did graduate work in educa-
tional psychology at Boston
College.
Her fiance was graduated
cum laude from Oakland
University and with de-
partmental honors in
sociology. He was ordained
at the Hebrew Union
College-Jewish Institute of
Religion.
A December wedding is
planned.

Taubman of the Taubman
Company will serve as the
general dinner chairmen for
the 1983 Bnai. Brith Inter-
national Great American
Traditions Award Dinner,
6:30 p.m. Nov. 22 at the
Westin Hotel.
Bnai Brith has selected
General Motors' Roger B.
Smith as the honoree. GM is
commemorating its `75th
anniversary and Bnai Brith
is celebrating 140 years of
service.
A committee planning
meeting was held recently,
chaired by Dr. William

Haber, professor emeritus
of the University of Michi-
gan.

The Great American
Traditions Award is pre-
sented to individuals
"whose life, vision,
philanthropy, commu-
nity leadership and out-
standing contribution to
the social and cultural
life of our nation best
exemplify the American
tradition of selfless ser-
vice.

The dinner aids Bnai
Brith's youth serving agen-
cies: AZA, BBG and the
Hillel Foundations on the
college campuses.

BB Conducts Member Drive

The Bnai Brith Met-
ropolitan Detroit Council is
conducting a campaign to
alert the community to its
programs and activities.
The membership cam-
paign is being conducted in
conjunction with the organ-
ization's 140th anniversary
observance.

ing enrolled members to
help make calls in the com-
munity for which they will

be compensated. Members
interested in making calls
or persons needing informa-
tion about Bnai Brith

of Illinois, and is a doctoral
