JERUSALEM (JTA) —
The Supreme Court last
week declined to review a
decision by the Attorney
General not to prosecute
Gen. (res.) Matityahu Peled
for appearing together with
leaders of the Palestine Lib-
eration Organization at a
press conference during the
war in Lebanon in 1982.
•The -high court ordered
Yedidya Beeri, an attorney
who filed the complaint
against Peled, to pay 40,000
Shekels in court costs. Jus-
tice Yitzhak Kahan,
president of the Supreme
Court, said the Attorney
General's decision not to
bring charges against Peled
was made in good faith.
Peled is a long-time critic of
the government's policy on
West Bank settlements and
the Palestinians.

Israel to Shun_
Atlanta Parley
on Middle East

WASHINGTON — Israel
has canceled plans for offi-
cial participation in a con-
ference on the Middle East
next month at Emory Uni-
versity in Atlanta to be
hosted by former Presidents
Jimmy Carter and Gerald
Ford.
According to a spokesman
at the Israeli embassy in
Washington, the with-
drawal was originally con-
templated when Israel dis-
covered that a leading
Palestinian author, Dr.
Walid Khalidi, accepted an
invitation to participate in
the Nov. 6-9' parley. Coun-
tries that have agreed to
send officials in addition to
the United- States include
Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan,
Syria and Saudi Arabia.

A similar case had a
different outcome Oct. 20
when a Haifa magistrate's
court sentenced an Arab lef-
tist lawyer, Mohammad
Miari, to eight days deten-
tion for having met with
PLO leaders in Geneva two
months ago.
Police testified that Miari
had "private working meet-
ings" with PLO chief Yasir
Arafat and the PLO's
foreign adviser, Farouk
Kaddoumi, during the In-
ternational Convention for
Palestine. They submitted
classified information to
substantiate the charge
that Miari was guilty of a
"very serious violation of
the contacts with enemy
agents" law.

TEL AVIV (JTA) — Nine
Soviet army officers visited
Tiberias last Friday during
a United Nations ceremony
honoring members of the
UN Disengagement Ob-
server Force (UNDOF) on
the Golan Heights.
The tour of Tiberias in-
cluded a visit to Kibutz
Mahanayim. The guide said
the Russians were espe
cially interested to know
what happened to the
money earned by the kibutz
farm and industries. The
visitors asked to visit. the
children's quarters, where
the youngsters showed spe-
cial interest in the gilt
swords carried by three
Soviet officers.

called on world Jewry to
help alleviate Israel's eco-
