Thank You
In the Torah we find that when Reuven heard the wicked scheme the brothers had
conceived to kill their brother Joseph, he intervened, admonishing them, and so saved his
life. The Rashba, one of our Rishonim, states in one of his Responsa that since the Torah
commends Reuven's efforts to save his brother, it is praiseworthy to publicly extol good
deeds performed by an individual or a group of people.

We therefore want to take this opportunity to express our gratitude and appreciation to
all the many organizations listed here and the thousands of individuals they represent who
have been instrumental in helping us to serve the many needy, poor and unfortunate in our
community over these many years. As we contemplate leaving the city after 38 years, we
find this an opportune time to publicly extol the virtues and sincere efforts that all have
given to the many causes which we undertook together. They have truly fulfilled the dictum
•of Ecclesiastes: "Whatever thy hands find to do, do it with all thy strength."

In addition to the thanks which are their due, we would like to add our Brochah,
blessing, for the future. We reflected for some time about the type of Brochah that would
befit them. What came to mind was a little parable mentioned in the Talmud, Tractate
Taanith: "A man was journeying in the desert; he was hungry, weary and thirsty. He lighted
upon a tree the fruits of which were sweet, its shade pleasant and a stream of water flowed
beneath it. He ate of the fruits, drank the water and rested under its shade. As he was about
to continue on his journey, he realized the tree had saved his life. He turned to the tree and
said, 'Tree, dear tree, how shall I bless thee? Shall I give thee a blessing that thy fruits be
sweet? they are sweet already; that thy shade be pleasant? it is pleasant already; that thou
constantly have a source of water to nourish thee? that thou hast, too. Therefore, I say,
may it be the will of the Al-mighty that all the shoots taken from thee be like unto thee.' "
As we take leave of you and we think of your dedication, your sincerity, your
compassion and loving kindness, we realize that you are already blessed with all the
wonderful qualities that make organizations such as yours the pride of our people, and
more particularly, of our community. The only blessing we can bestow upon you, therefore,
is: "May you be an example for all Jewish organizations of dedication combined with heart
and warmth."
We would have been delighted to mention by name the hundreds of individuals who
have been so helpful but we must forego this pleasure with deep regret because of the
limitations of space. You know who you are and you know how grateful we are to you. Nor
should we forget those who preceded you in this work, who are no longer among the living,
who dedicated so many hours, so much effort and above all so much warmth and love.
Undoubtedly, they are known to Him above and He can show His appreciation far better
than we, as He walks with them in the Gan Eden (Paradise).
Thank you, one and all.
Rabbi and Mrs. Solomon H. Gruskin
