Irving Howe continues, as
he has for more than two de-
cades, in the role of the
staunchest advocates of de-
votion to Yiddish as a lan-
guage and as the creative
literary force.
In his "World of Our
Fathers," he gave evidence
of it, in addition to his hav-
ing edited and shared in
translating many Yiddish
classics, of his interest in

NEW YORK-The Betar
Educational Youth Organ-
ization expressed its out-
rage over a map displayed
in the front window of the
New York office of Alia Air-
lines, the official Airline of
Jordan. The map depicts the
Middle East on a white
background with Jordan
colored in yellow. Included
in the yellow area are the
territories of greater Israel
including Jerusaleni. A_
black star and the name
Amman stands in the mid-
dle of this yellow shaded
area.
A Betar spokesman said
the displaying of this map
"leads passing-by pedest-
rians to believe that the
state of Israel is part of the
Kingdom of Jordan."
Kate Feldman, a man-
ager at Alia, said that the
map only depicted the coun-
tries to which Alia flies.
Asked by a Betar represen-
tative what the political
implications are of the color
yellow on Jordan and Israel
only,. Ms. Feldman said, "I
don't know, but we will be
removing the map tempo-
rarily for review at an ad-
vertising meeting."
